Jamaica Was Home to People Before the Maya Built Their First Pyramids Long before the rise of the Maya, Jamaica was already home to people who crossed the Caribbean by canoe, lived along its coastlines, explored its caves, hunted its wildlife, and built a life on the island thousands of years ago. Archaeological evidence from Jamaica’s southern coast points to human occupation dating back as far as 2,000–3,000 BC—placing these early Jamaicans in the same broad era as Stonehenge, before the rise of the Olmec, and centuries before the Maya developed their great cities. But what did they leave behind? Shell middens. Stone tools. Animal bones. Ancient hearths. Cave deposits. Offshore camps. And fragments of a forgotten world buried beneath Jamaica’s soil, limestone, and coastal landscapes. In this documentary, we follow the evidence of Jamaica’s Archaic Age, examining sites such as Little River, Cow Island, White Marl, and the caves of the Hellshire Hills, while exploring what archaeologists have learned about the people who lived there long before the Taino.
