Beneath Jamaica’s limestone hills lies a hidden world of caves, underground rivers, forgotten passages, aqueducts, and buried infrastructure — and some of these tunnels may have changed history far beyond the island itself. In this documentary, we count down 10 Jamaican tunnels and underground systems connected to archaeology, colonial engineering, trade, warfare, agriculture, Kingston Harbour, and the Maroon resistance. From the tidal caves of Hellshire and the early Spanish water conduit at Sevilla la Nueva, to the karst systems beneath St. Elizabeth, the historic Hope River aqueduct, the fractured water systems of the Blue Mountains, and the submerged remains of Port Royal, Jamaica’s underground landscape reveals another side of the island’s history. But the story becomes even more extraordinary when we reach Cockpit Country. Between 1728 and 1739, the Leeward Maroons under Cudjoe fought British forces across some of the most difficult terrain in the Caribbean. The British could control roads, settlements, and surface routes — but the Maroons knew the caves, sinkholes, underground passages, and hidden routes beneath the landscape. On March 1, 1739, Britain signed a peace treaty with the Maroons, recognizing their land and self-government. The final chapter explores a much larger historical question: whether the Jamaican Maroon resistance became part of the Caribbean military tradition that influenced later revolutionary warfare in Saint-Domingue, the Haitian Revolution, Napoleon’s failed campaign, and ultimately the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. This is a story about the history that exists beneath the surface — and how water, limestone, caves, tunnels, and hidden routes became part of the forces that shaped Jamaica and the wider Americas.
