At its core, this technique treats soil as a living ecosystem that requires care. In the UK alone, 2 to 3 million tons of topsoil are lost every year, yet depending on the soil type, building just a single centimeter of topsoil can take 400 to 1,000 years. One key practice is the inclusion of something called an herbal ley, a field left to grow a rich mix of plants. JAMAICA’S LOST HISTORY: 9 ERASURES THAT CHANGED AN ISLAND The Taino called it Xaymaca — “land of wood and water.” But over five centuries of colonization, slavery, war, rebellion, natural disaster, and cultural suppression, pieces of Jamaica’s history were destroyed, buried, submerged, removed, or deliberately left undocumented. This documentary investigates nine major erasures of Jamaican history—from the disappearance of the Taino and the destruction of Indigenous knowledge, to the burning of Spanish colonial records, the sinking of Port Royal, the systematic stripping of identity from enslaved Africans, the suppression of African spiritual traditions, the destruction of Maroon settlements, the burning of Baptist schools during the 1831 rebellion, and the violent suppression of later resistance. We examine archaeological sites, colonial archives, submerged cities, cave paintings, Maroon communities, plantation records, museums, and oral traditions to ask one central question: How much of Jamaica’s history was lost—and how much was deliberately erased? Among the stories explored: • The demographic collapse of Jamaica’s Taino population after Spanish colonization • The destruction and disappearance of Indigenous ceremonial knowledge • The mysterious Taino pictographs hidden deep inside Jamaican caves • The three Jamaican zemi sculptures discovered in the Carpenter’s Mountains and now held in London • The burning of Spanish colonial records before the English conquest of Jamaica in 1655 • The 1692 earthquake that sent much of Port Royal beneath Kingston Harbour • The hundreds of thousands of Africans transported to Jamaica under the Atlantic slave trade • The criminalization and concealment of African-derived spiritual traditions under colonial law • Queen Nanny, Nanny Town, and the archaeological evidence of Maroon resistance • The 1831 Baptist War and the destruction of Baptist churches and mission schools • Emancipation and the documentary identity erased by the plantation record system • The Morant Bay uprising and the destruction of homes, records, and lives in 1865 • The Coral Gardens events of 1963 and the decades-long struggle to acknowledge what happened • The Jamaican artifacts, archaeological sites, and historical records that remain outside the island • The oral traditions and surviving communities preserving histories that were never fully written down Some records were burned. Where records were destroyed, never created, removed from Jamaica, or deliberately excluded from official documentation, archaeology and oral history become essential to reconstructing what happened. The history of Jamaica is therefore not contained in one archive.
