In the first three months of 2026, the police division covering Spanish Town recorded seven murders. Less than a decade earlier, over the same three months, it counted fifty-two. That is not the story most people know about Jamaica's old capital. And it is not the part investors were watching either. In July 2024, standing at Jamaica House, the Prime Minister said something out loud that he could easily have kept to himself — that while the public was still writing Spanish Town off, there were people quietly buying up land there. Making strategic purchases. Positioning. The repricing had already started. This video breaks down all NINE major projects reshaping Spanish Town and the land around it — what each one costs, who is paying for it, exactly how far along it actually is right now in August 2026, and which of them survives the largest financial shock in Jamaica's recorded history. Because Hurricane Melissa changed the arithmetic. The Planning Institute of Jamaica put the total damage, losses and associated costs at J$1.952 trillion — roughly 57% of the country's entire 2024 economic output, and more than four times Hurricane Gilbert. There is only one capital budget. Every dollar rebuilding the west is a dollar argued for somewhere else. So which projects are real, which have already slipped, and which single one would still transform this town even if half the others stalled? New Brunswick Village — the six-billion-dollar private bet that changed what banks believe about Spanish Town. The Spanish Town Bypass — finally named on a funded national priority list. Greater Innswood — the master-planned township almost nobody has heard of. The St Catherine North Police Divisional Headquarters — and why it slipped nine months. The MJS Industrial and Technology Park — 3,800 jobs built inside a factory that sat dead in bush for decades. The Rio Cobre Water Treatment Plant — the ceiling every other project is pressed against. The Spanish Town Hospital redevelopment — a 70-year-old Type B hospital becoming a Type A regional facility. And at number one, the Caymanas Special Economic Zone — the project that does not just improve Spanish Town, but rewires what Spanish Town is for. Spanish Town was founded in 1534. It was the capital of this island, continuously, until 1872. The railway station opened in 1845 and closed in 1992. The great factory that employed the town collapsed and sat in bush for decades. That is a hundred and fifty years of a place being told it was the past. One moment I was walking through narrow limestone streets surrounded by medieval architecture, and the next I was looking across crystal-clear water toward tiny islands scattered across the Adriatic Sea. That contrast is what made exploring Dalmatia so special for me. In this Dalmatia travel guide, I’m sharing 25 of the best places to visit along the Dalmatian Coast, including famous Croatian destinations, beautiful seaside towns, historic cities, peaceful islands, beaches, national parks, old fortresses, and a few places that deserve much more attention. From the historic streets of Split and Dubrovnik to the island atmosphere of Hvar, Brač, Korčula, and Vis, Dalmatia offers an incredible mix of culture and natural beauty. Cities such as Zadar, Šibenik, and Trogir reveal another side of Croatia through Roman ruins, Venetian architecture, ancient churches, waterfront promenades, and atmospheric old towns. But some of my favorite moments came outside the major cities.
