Srebrenica: The Massacre That Shook the World and Changed Nothing | Full Documentary
In the 1990s, the collapse of Yugoslavia triggered nearly a decade of war in the Balkans, leaving more than 100,000 dead and millions displaced in the worst European conflict since World War II. This documentary follows the final and bloodiest phase of that disintegration: from the Washington Agreement of March 1994 to the fall of Srebrenica on July 11, 1995, when General Ratko Mladic's troops breached the UN protection zone and systematically murdered over 8,000 Muslim men and boys in the largest massacre on European soil since 1945. While the United Nations watched and stalled, Sarajevo endured the longest siege of the 20th century at 1,425 days, until NATO's Operation Deliberate Force in August 1995 forced the warring parties to the table, ending the Bosnian War with the Dayton Agreement signed in Paris on December 14, 1995. Yet peace proved fragile: as the Kosovo Liberation Army, founded in 1996, escalated its guerrilla war against Serbian forces, the Racak massacre of January 1999 triggered NATO's Operation Allied Force on March 24, 1999, with 78 days of airstrikes that saw German jets in combat for the first time since World War II. Milosevic capitulated in June 1999, and Karadzic and Mladic were eventually sentenced to life imprisonment in The Hague, but with Bosnia's ethnic divisions frozen, Kosovo's independence still unrecognized by Serbia, and outside powers competing for influence across the region, the powder keg of the Western Balkans remains dangerously unresolved.
