The Dog Scamming Kingpins - BBC Africa Eye Documentary
#BBCAfricaEye goes undercover inside the world of Uganda's sham pet shelters - where scammers profit from animals in distress, while dog lovers around the world team up to fight back. Click here to subscribe to our channel 👉🏽 http://bit.ly/subscribetoafrica A town in Uganda is at the centre of a bizarre and cruel business: sham pet shelters.   Hundreds of social media accounts, operated from the town of Mityana, pump out video after video of pitiful looking animals - mainly dogs, cats, and some rabbits - needing donations for food, shelter, and vet treatments. But not all is as it seems. Instead of benefitting the animals, these videos have been used to scam dog lovers around the world, and line scammers' pockets. As donors realise their donations have been funding cars, phones, and pool parties, online activists globally have begun organising unofficial missions to remove dogs from shelters they consider abusive. Africa Eye goes undercover to expose how social media’s love for dogs has been used to turn cruelty into profit. 00:00 Save Our Dogs: Inside Uganda’s Rescue Scam 01:41 An open secret in Mityana 04:02 Going undercover 05:05 Inside the shelter 05:56 How to trick donors 06:04 The ‘land’ trick 06:38 The ‘expensive food’ trick 06:55 The ‘fake vet treatments’ trick 07:30 ‘Squeeze them out of their money’ 08:49 The people fighting back 10:19 A British donor in Uganda 13:59 Why young people become scammers 15:22 The dog at the centre of it all 19:47 Rescue missions 17:04 A dark discovery 21:37 A revelation in Russet’s story 23:12 The truth about Russet 🚨 UPDATE 13/05/26: Dozens of dogs rescued and suspect arrested in Uganda following this #BBCAfricaEye investigation: https://bbc.in/4u5iwsz 📽️ Watch this film in SWAHILI here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8AGMOizgYs And in FRENCH here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bC8HDZZUH6w 🎞️ Check out all Africa Eye investigations here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLajyiGz4JeyO2qgCvioQO-BzP1XCajJqt 🎧 Listen to The Documentary podcast 'For the love of dogs' here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/w3ct9b85 Watch more investigative journalism from our award-winning #BBCEye investigations team at this documentary playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLz_B0PFGIn4fa8LK1lptsvoA_spfJhzda You may also be interested in watching these BBC Eye documentaries: https://youtu.be/I0DJlSqlmEw https://youtu.be/EGj89n7SxOo https://youtu.be/191CuNRGoos https://youtu.be/jbakXt_jZgQ https://youtu.be/tI3AKMFgVKQ *** Subscribe: http://bit.ly/subscribetoafrica Website: https://www.bbc.com/africa Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bbcnewsafrica/ Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/bbcafrica/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bbcafrica/ #Uganda #Documentary #Dogs #Puppy #Animals #InvestigativeJournalism #BBCAfrica

Why are more men getting paternity tests? | The Conversation | Focus on Africa
Paternity testing is becoming increasingly common across Africa. These are tests done using DNA that tell you whether someone is the biological father of their child. Local media reports from countries like Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya and Malawi suggest a growing number of men are actively seeking them out. One testing centre in Nigeria told Focus on Africa that the number of paternity tests it conducted rose by 28.8% in 2025 compared to the previous year. Focus on Africa Podcast host Nkechi Ogbonna spoke to Dr. Peter Ngumba, a lab technologist in Kenya who, through his work conducting DNA tests, decided to test the paternity of his own two children. #focusonafrica #bbcafrica #paternity 00:00-00:40 Coming up 00:40-01:26 The rise of paternity testing in Africa 01:26-02:40 Why Peter became an advocate of testing 02:40-03:10 How many men come to his clinic? 03:10-04:20 Why Peter decided to do a test on his own children 04:20-06:25 The results of the test for his first child 06:25-08:30 Getting a DNA test for his second child 08:15-13:18 The issue of infertility in men 13:18-20:00 Breaking the bond with the child 20:00-21:50 Hearing from other men who have gone through a paternity test 21:50-23:05 How would you feel if your partner asked you for a test? 23:05-23:30 Would Peter get a test on his future children?
