US Senate Advances Plan to End Government Shutdown; AI Doubts on TSMC Sales | The Pulse 11/10
The US Senate took a major step toward re-opening the government after a group of moderate Democrats broke with their party leaders and voted to support a deal to end the record-breaking shutdown. The Senate voted 60-40 on a procedural measure to advance the bill Sunday evening. The House also needs to approve the measure before it goes to President Donald Trump’s desk for his signature. Under the agreement, Congress would pass full-year funding for the departments of Agriculture, Veterans Affairs and Congress itself, while funding other agencies through Jan. 30. The bill would provide pay for furloughed government workers, resume withheld federal payments to states and localities and recall agency employees who were laid off during the shutdown. TSMC reported a slowing growth in monthly revenue, highlighting uncertainty over the sustainability of the AI boom even as industry behemoths including Nvidia chase more chip supplies. TSMC posted a 16.9% rise in sales for October, the slowest pace since February 2024. Analysts on average are expecting sales to increase 16% in the current quarter. Industry executives remain buoyant about AI-driven growth as major tech firms are accelerating investments in data centers. The TSMC revenue gain also just covers just a single month of business, offering investors less insight. Did BBC Mislead UK Viewers Over Trump's Capitol Riot Speech?
Two top British Broadcasting Corp. chiefs resigned amid allegations the UK broadcaster misled viewers by editing a speech given by President Donald Trump on the day of the Capitol riot. A documentary which aired last year made Trump appear to say that his supporters should “walk down to the Capitol” and “fight like hell.” In fact, he said they should “cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women.” The “fight like hell” remark was from a different part of the speech. As Snow, Shutdown Grounds Flights, How Will Thanksgiving Be Affected?
More than 10,000 flights in the US were delayed or canceled on Sunday as snowy weather in Chicago added to the stress for airlines coping with a third day of US government-mandated restrictions on air travel. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned that US air travel would come to a virtual standstill during the Thanksgiving holiday in late November if the government shutdown persists, as more air-traffic controllers opt not to work without paychecks. Bloomberg's Leen Al-Rashdan reports. -------- More on Bloomberg Television and Markets Like this video? Will Zohran Mamdani’s Plans to Make NYC Affordable Work?
New York City’s next mayor, Zohran Mamdani, promises to make the city more affordable by freezing rents and raising taxes to pay for his programs. But business leaders warn that higher taxes could backfire. We speak with Partnership for New York’s Kathryn Wylde, BXP CEO Owen Thomas, and developer Brian Steinwurtzel on the balance between growth and affordability, the challenge of delivering on the housing units the city needs, and what the new administration must do to attract talent and investment while making the city more livable. -------- More on Wall Street Week Like this video? Tariffs on Trial: What’s at Stake in Trump’s Supreme Court Argument
The Supreme Court is hearing arguments over President Trump’s authority to impose tariffs under a statute that gives the president “emergency” powers. Jennifer Hillman of the Council on Foreign Relations explains how the case tests the Constitution’s grant of trade powers to Congress and could trigger up to $100 billion in tariff refunds if the Court strikes the tariffs down. Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers calls tariffs a “self-inflicted supply shock” that raises prices and slows growth -------- More on Bloomberg Television and Markets Like this video? Wall Street Week | Tariff Legality, Businesses on Mamdani, Pediatrics Under Pressure, Protein Boom
This week, can Congress delegate its authority over trade and tariffs to the president? The Supreme Court questioned the Trump Administration’s argument that a statute passed by Congress gives the president the power to impose worldwide tariffs. But if the Court disagrees with the administration, who pays - and how much? And, New York City’s mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani vows to make the city more affordable, but business leaders say that it’s more complicated. Plus, HHS Secretary RFK Jr. claims doctors are reaping big profits from vaccines, but pediatricians say that’s far from the truth. Later, why are Americans eating so much protein? President Trump reached a deal with drugmakers Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk to make GLP-1s more accessible to more of the American population, and protein producers - new and old - could stand to gain.
