Shoppers Look Ahead to Black Friday, Cyber Monday Deals
Tiffany Yeh, Boston Consulting Group Managing Director, previews her expectations for Black Friday and the remainder of the holiday spending season. On past Black Fridays, Eilise Fisher has fired up her laptop and searched for deals on big-ticket items: A reduced Le Creuset Dutch oven, or a new TV at 30% off. This year, her shopping cart looks a little different — Fisher is planning to stock up on three 40-pound bags of Purina kibble, the favorite snack of her three rescue dogs: Luke, Leia and Yoda. Fisher, a 47-year-old government project manager living in Flagstaff, Arizona, has also created a color-coded spreadsheet of her potential purchases, detailing the product’s original price and any available discounts. It’s a step beyond her usual wish list. As US consumers remain anxious about job security and the cost of living, some, like Fisher, are using seasonal sales — a period usually geared toward gift buying and the occasional personal indulgence — to restock on essentials. They’re also taking a more cautious approach to shopping; sticking to pre-planned purchases and buying gift cards instead of potentially unwanted presents.  It’s a trend that’s been gathering momentum in recent months. Household items like dish soap and dishwasher rinse aid were among bestsellers during an Amazon Prime sale this summer. And about 64% of shoppers said they planned to buy on-sale necessities during recent October discounts, according to a report from consultancy Deloitte. That’s up from 58% who said the same in 2024.  “As we saw during this summer’s back-to-school shopping season, consumers are keen to take advantage of holiday spending events to also purchase everyday goods,” said Mark Mathews, chief economist and executive director of research at the National Retail Federation. -------- More on Bloomberg Television and Markets Like this video? Big Tech Spend Fuels Next Leg of AI Arms Race
Dan Ives, Global Head of Tech Research at Wedbush Securities, discusses the AI landscape and what stocks he is looking at as we head into 2026. Meta Platforms Inc. is in talks to spend billions on Google’s AI chips, the Information reported, adding to a monthslong share rally as the search giant has made the case it can rival Nvidia Corp. as a leader in artificial intelligence technology. A deal would signal growing momentum for Google’s chips and long-term potential to challenge Nvidia’s market dominance, after the company earlier agreed to supply up to 1 million chips to Anthropic PBC. Google owner Alphabet Inc. is on track to hit a $4 trillion market valuation for the first time when trading opens in New York on Wednesday. Nvidia’s shares were down about 4% in premarket trading. Meta is in discussions to use the Google chips — known as tensor processing units, or TPUs — in data centers in 2027, The Information reported, citing an unidentified person familiar with the talks. Meta also may rent chips from Google’s cloud division next year, the news outlet said. An agreement would help establish TPUs as an alternative to Nvidia’s chips, the gold standard for big tech firms and startups from Meta to OpenAI that need computing power to develop and run artificial intelligence platforms. Nvidia’s stock is already facing headwinds as investors fear a broader AI bubble. Michael Burry, immortalized in The Big Short for his bets against the housing market during the 2008 financial crisis, has scrutinized the chipmaker over circular AI deals, hardware depreciation and revenue recognition. After Google’s Anthropic deal was announced, Seaport analyst Jay Goldberg called it a “really powerful validation” for TPUs. “A lot of people were already thinking about it, and a lot more people are probably thinking about it now,” he said. “Google Cloud is experiencing accelerating demand for both our custom TPUs and NVIDIA GPUs; we are committed to supporting both, as we have for years,” a spokesperson for Google said. -------- More on Bloomberg Television and Markets Like this video? Post UK Budget Special: Reeves Raises Taxes by £26B | The Opening Trade 11/27/2025
Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves announced £26 billion of tax increases in a budget that was meant to convey stability but left investors reeling when most of the key measures were accidentally released early. The policies in the budget, in which Reeves more than doubled her key fiscal buffer to £22 billion, were posted online by the Office for Budget Responsibility about an hour before she rose to speak in the House of Commons. The OBR apologized and launched an investigation into the error, which Reeves described as “deeply disappointing.” The Opening Trade has everything you need to know as markets open across Europe.
