Before Canada. Before Australia. Jamaica was already ahead of the world. What followed was over a century of expansion, connection, and national pride. From Kingston to Spanish Town, Montego Bay to Port Antonio — Jamaica's railway network stretched 216 miles across the island, moving sugar cane, bananas, bauxite, and hundreds of thousands of Jamaican people every single year. Then came the fall. By the 1970s financial pressures began closing lines one by one. Communities that had been connected for generations were slowly cut off. And in October 1992 public passenger service ceased entirely. Today the tracks are largely silent — except for a few bauxite trains still making their runs across sections of the island. Pro-Palestinian activists say 22 boats from an aid flotilla heading to Gaza have been intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters near the Greek island of Crete. Organisers of the Global Sumud Flotilla say those on board were seized unlawfully, describing the move as “piracy” and saying it happened more than 965km from Gaza, which is under an Israeli naval blockade. Israel’s foreign ministry says about 175 activists were detained and dismissed the flotilla as a “PR stunt”. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said they would be “disembarked on a Greek beach” later on Thursday. Data from the group suggests the remaining boats are now near Crete’s south coast. For centuries, Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia, Brunei and China have disputed territories in the South China Sea. But China’s claims of overriding sovereignty over the entire sea, supported by annexations and aggressive military patrols, have turned the sea into a global hotspot. On a deserted beach in the north of the Philippines, 200 heavily armed Marines train alongside Filipino soldiers. Never have tensions between the Philippines and Beijing been so high and the United States is pulling out all the stops to prove they are ready to repel a Chinese invasion. According to international law, the Scarborough Shoal belongs to the Philippines. But, in 2012, China illegally seized it and prohibited access to outsiders. Filipino fisherman have been harassed and attacked. In this documentary, we join a coast guard patrol and are soon surrounded by Chinese militias, who attack with water cannons and ram the patrol boat, damaging its navigation equipment. It’s a move that could easily have killed the crew but attacks like this are regular occurrences. At the heart of these disputes are the Spratly Islands, an archipelago of islets and coral reefs, disputed by six countries. China has already annexed seven of the Spratly reefs and transformed them into military bases. In Taiwan, the pressure is mounting. Xi Jinping has officially announced that the island is an “inalienable” part of China and, in Taipei, they are now planning for a possible military invasion. “I feel very scared,” confides one woman, “China is nearby and there is always a threat.”

The country is at the heart of international cocaine trafficking. To cope with the cartels’ stranglehold, the 36-year-old President Daniel Noboa has declared a state of emergency. We obtained exceptional authorization to follow the extraordinary operations of the police and army. Today, the entire state is mobilized to restore calm and order. But will this be enough? In Guayaquil, the country’s economic capital and largest port, the entire city is under cartel control. Amid containers full of bananas, we followed the army’s operations to track down the cocaine. The battle is also being waged in the prisons, which have been held by the Narcos for years. Our journalists were able to enter the high-security section of the Guayaquil prison. It was from here that Fito, leader of the “Choneros”, the country’s most powerful gang, escaped. In this all-out war against the Narcos, politicians and judges are on the front line. What we discovered was more than just crumbling masonry. It was a story about power, protection, and the forgotten history beneath the feet of one of Jamaica's most populated communities. Built in 1782 by a man named David Small, Fort Small — as it was originally known — was strategically positioned to guard the bay between Port Henderson and the Hellshire Hills. Designed to mount eight 24-pounder guns and one ten-inch mortar, this fortification was Britain's answer to a Caribbean under siege. France and Spain were pressing in on every side, and Jamaica — the crown jewel of Britain's colonial empire — could not afford to fall. Extensively repaired in 1790 and formally listed among Jamaica's island forts by 1799, the fort was renamed Fort Clarence — in honour of Prince William Henry, Duke of Clarence, a Royal Navy officer who had sailed these very waters and would later become King William IV of England. A small fort. A royal name. A story most Jamaicans have never heard. In this video we also explore the Great Salt Pond of Portmore — a remarkable brackish water ecosystem that has quietly sustained wildlife and coastal life for centuries. Home to the protected American Crocodile, migratory birds, and mangrove nurseries, the salt pond is as much a part of Portmore's identity as any road or building. Together, Fort Clarence and the Great Salt Pond reveal something profound: Portmore is not just a modern bedroom community.
