Tamara Press Breaks Her Own Shot Put World Record - Tokyo 1964 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe After winning the gold medal in the discus event the USSR's Tamara Press went on to not only win the gold medal in the shot put but also break her own world record in the event at the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games. Tamara Press' challenge at the Tokyo 1964 Games was to retain her shot put title and take the discus gold. Two years earlier, she had secured the double in the European Championships, and her greatest rivals there were likely to be her main competitors in Tokyo. On the day after she won gold in the discus event, it was time for the shot put, an event in which Press had broken the world record twice since the Rome Olympic Games. But while nerves had blighted the early rounds of her discus final, this time around she was in form from the very start. Her first put took her into a lead that she never looked like losing. In fact, Press's final effort was her longest - an Olympic record distance of 18.14m - but by then her victory was all but assured. She was to retire from competition a couple of years later, having secured a haul of three golds and one silver medal. Pre-Rhythmic Gymnastics Highlights - USSR Routine | Helsinki 1952 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Highlights from the USSR's gymnastics routine at the Helsinki 1952 Olympic Games where traces can be found of the soon approaching new discipline of rhythmic gymnastics. Rhythmic Gymnastics was first recognized as a separate discipline by the International Gymnastics Federations (FIG) in 1963. Still, it was not hard to find the elements that originated the discipline within the sport of Gymnastics many years earlier, even at the Olympic Games. The Helsinki 1952 Games were a great example the evolution of the sport, which later developed into a separate discipline, as the Soviet Union presented its team routine. With hoops and including influences from its well known Russian ballet, the Soviet women's team won Olympic gold, followed by Hungary (silver) and Czechoslovakia (bronze). Rhythmic Gymnastics would later join the Olympic programme as a separate discipline at the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games with the individual event. It was Canada's Lori Fung who won the inaugural gold medal.
