Bob Beamon's Incredible Leap - Long Jump | Mexico 1968 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe The amazing highlights from Bob Beamon's performance at the Mexico 1968 Olympic Games in the long jump, for more on this historic moment click see more. Beamon was the pre-tournament favourite but almost went out at the qualifying stage. He overstepped the mark on his first two jumps and with only one left, turned to a team-mate for help. Ralph Boston advised him to take off way before the board. Beamon did so and qualified easily for the final. Beamon's first jump of the final was so long that the optical measuring device slid off its rail before reaching Beamon's mark. Using an old-fashioned steel tape, the officials announced the distance as 8.90m. Beamon collapsed, overcome by emotion. Until that moment, it had taken 33 years for the long jump world record to progress 22 centimetres, but in one leap, Beamon added another 55 centimetres. This record, although aided by the high altitude of Mexico City, was one of the longest standing in history, lasting another 23 years. Bob Beamon's first leap at the 1968 Mexico City Games long jump final inspired a new word. "Beamonesque" means an athletic feat so superior to what has come before, it is overwhelming. 16 Year Old Elizabeth Robinson Wins 100m - New WR | Amsterdam 1928 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Follow the incredible performance in the women's 100m event at the Amsterdam 1928 Olympic Games as Elizabeth Robinson wins gold setting a new world record at the ages of just 16. Of all the Olympic adventures enjoyed by athletes down the years, few can match the drama experienced by American sprinter Betty Robinson. She was the first women's 100m champion, she remains to this day the youngest and her story is one of the most remarkable in the history of the Games. When she ran in the final of the 100m at the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928, it was only her fourth competitive race and she was just 16. She had been spotted running after a train by her schoolteacher and was encouraged to take up sprinting. In her second competitive race, a matter of months before the Games in Holland, she broke the world record in an unofficial time. She arrived in Amsterdam about as inexperienced as you can be but sometimes that level of naivety can work in your favour, and Robinson was far from over-awed by the occasion. The six-woman final was whittled down to four sprinters after a series of false starts saw two competitors disqualified. When the start finally came, Robinson surged steadily clear before winning in a world record 12.2secs, finishing about a foot clear of Canadians Bobbie Rosenfeld and Ethel Smith. Three years later and Robinson was to experience even greater drama. Travelling in a biplane piloted by her cousin, it crashed and Robinson was given up for dead when rescuers found the body among the wreckage. She and her cousin were placed in the trunk of a car and taken to an undertakers but on arrival they were found to be alive and Robinson remained in a coma for seven months. She had suffered a broken leg, a crushed arm and severe concussion but her determination saw her recover and by 1936 she was back at the Olympics in Berlin. So severe was her leg injury that she was unable to kneel down and could not compete in the 100m. However she was still able to run in the relay and she helped steer the US quartet to 4x100m gold in an astonishing performance. China Raises US Tariffs, UK Economy Growth Surges | The Opening Trade 04/11
China retaliated against President Donald Trump’s latest tariffs by hiking duties on all US goods, while calling the administration’s actions a “joke” and saying it no longer considers them worth matching. Beijing will raise tariffs on all US goods from 84% to 125% starting April 12, the Ministry of Finance said on Friday, after the White House clarified that levies on Chinese goods rose to 145% this year. Britain’s economy posted the strongest growth in almost a year in February as factories ramped up production ahead of Trump’s wave of tariffs. While the figures are a major boost for the Labour government and puts the economy on course for a positive first quarter, the respite could be fleeting as the White House started to upend the global economic order with a slew of tariff announcements in March and April. China-EU Ties Amid Trump Tariffs Onslaught: Spain's Sanchez Meets Xi
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez repeated calls for the European Union to deepen ties with China, brushing aside warnings from the US that it would be detrimental to do so. "We believe it is necessary to continue making progress in establishing solid relations between China and the European Union, and also between China and Spain," Sanchez said in a press conference in Beijing after meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. (Translated into English from Spanish. Tariffs and FX: Germany's Kukies Says Euro Can Have Stronger Role in Global Trade
Germany’s Finance Minister Joerg Kukies says the European Union has a chance "to give stronger weight to the euro in global trade." He made the comments in an interview with Bloomberg's Oliver Crook on the sidelines of an informal meeting of the EU’s finance ministers in Warsaw. "For that we would need an initiative from Europe to reach out to other regions of the world to speed up the conclusion of free trade agreements," Kukies added. -------- More on Bloomberg Television and Markets Like this video?
