After training in Finland in preparation to the Games, Philip Boit won the slot to represent Kenya in the Nagano 1998 Olympic Games. In the 10km classic cross-country skiing, Boit came in 92nd and last place. As he arrived to the finish line, he had the newly crowned Olympic champion Bjørn Dæhlie waiting to greet him for his achievement as the first Kenyan Winter Olympic athlete. Philip Boit would still return to the Winter Olympics in two more editions at Salt Lake City 2002 and Torino 2006. The two sides discussed Iran’s nuclear program and the lifting of sanctions “in a constructive atmosphere and with mutual respect,” the Iranian foreign ministry said in a statement after indirect talks in Oman that lasted for more than two hours. The underdog triumph came at the 1980 Lake Placid Olympic Winter Games as Team USA went on to win gold in the event. The Ice Hockey tournament at the Lake Placid Olympics was decided in a final group stage including United States, Soviet Union, Sweden and Finland. And, although there was no final match per say, the match between the USA and the USSR became later known as the unofficial final, dubbed the "Miracle on Ice". The Soviet team was heralded as the strongest in the world, with an amazing recent record, including beating the Americans by 10-3 in a preparatory match only three days before the Games. The match began closely with a 2x2 score at the end of the first period. During the second period only the Soviets scored, leaving the USA behind by 3x2 with 20 minutes left. Still, the United States made an impressive comeback and - pushed by their home supporters - scored twice in the final period to win the match by 4x3 in a thrilling and surprising turn of events. Team USA would later become the Olympic champion after a final 4x2 win against Finland. And the one who stopped the team's perfect record was not the most likely competitor, representing Great Britain, David Wilkie. Born in Colombo, Sri Lanka to Scottish parents, swimmer David Wilkie had already won a silver medal at the Munich 1972 Olympic Games in the men's 200m breaststroke event. His finest moment came in Montreal, where Wilkie not only broke American supremacy but also won Great Britain's first swimming gold medal since the London 1908 Games. David Wilkie retired from professional swimming after winning the Montreal Games. Kip Keino, an uncoached Nandi tribesman from Kenya, was already 28 years old when he made his second Olympic appearance at the 1968 Mexico City Games. Suffering from violent stomach pains caused by a gall bladder infection, Keino entered the 10,000m. He was running with the leaders when, with two laps to go, he doubled up with pain and fell onto the infield. He jumped back up and finished the race, but he was disqualified for leaving the track. Four days later, he earned a silver medal in the 5,000m, trailing Mohamed Gammoudi of Tunisia by barely a metre. In the 1,500m, Keino tried to neutralize the finishing kick of the favourite, Jim Ryun, by building up a huge lead. His tactic worked and he won by 20m, the largest margin of victory in the history of the event. American hurdlers had won every event since its inception at the Games in 1900, and Burghley ran a measured campaign. He qualified for the final third fastest in his semi, and in the race for gold he ran a superbly measured race. With Americans Frank Cuhel and Morgan Taylor the favourites, Burghley executed the perfect race. While the Americans, Cuhel in particular, were struggling with their stride patters as the race entered its final third, Burghley looked the model of control. With 60 metres to go he was level with Cuhel and looking across the cinder track at Cuhel he did just enough to win and secure the gold medal. It was a hugely popular win for a tremendously likable character. He was hoisted onto the shoulders of his fellow athletes.
