Ray Barbuti had been torn between a career in running and American football after a successful collegiate career in both sports, and he was finally chosen for the 400m and the relay by the selectors for the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam. The track and field events started badly for the U.S. team in Holland and much of it was surprisingly down to lacklustre preparation. The U.S. trials were held only a matter of weeks before the big event and with a long travel time many of the athletes were under-cooked by the time the action got under way in the Olympic Stadium. The huge number of competitors didn't help either with 15 first-round heats and six second-round eliminators required to whittle the field down to the two six-man semi-finals. However for all the congested build-up, Barbuti's rugged, workman-like running style stood out and he was setting some of the fastest times in the first and second round. He was edged into second place in his semi-final but he still qualified for the final which was run in appallingly wet and windy conditions. However Barbuti's raw power really told on the windswept track and he powered to a commanding lead through 300m. Yet the pain was etched on his face as Canadian James Ball ate into his lead in the home straight and it was with some relief when Barbuti finished just two tenths clear of Ball in a time of 47.8secs. It was the fastest time of the competition and no mean feat given the conditions. At any Olympic Games, there is great attention on the gymnastics, and every host nation hopes to have a home hero to cheer on. In Tokyo, that meant a great focus on Yukio Endo, Japan's foremost gymnast - the fulcrum of attention for both the individual and team events. The question was whether he would thrive or buckle under the pressure - the answer, emphatically, was to revel in the limelight and produce the performances of his life. Endo had lived in a state orphanage since the age of nine. He had been encouraged to take part in gymnastics by one of the teachers there "rather than just lying in bed". He progressed rapidly and was selected for the 1960 Games in Rome, where he helped Japan to a team gold. His individual showings were strong, but fell short of an individual medal. But Endo continued to improve and, by the time Tokyo hosted the Games, he was considered his nation's leading gymnast. By now, there was also an expectation that Japan would overtake the Soviet Union as the leading nation in gymnastics, adding to the pressure on Endo. He was 27 years old, and in his prime, and he took the blue-riband gold in the men's all-around contest with a dazzling series of displays, winning three of the six categories. Another gold followed in the parallel bars, in which teammate Shuji Tsurumi took silver, and then an inspiring performance in the team event, in which Endo achieved the highest individual score. He also won a silver in the floor exercises. And the result? Japan was the leading gymnastics nation at the 1964 Games, and the team were acclaimed as national heroes, with Endo the biggest star of the lot. He carried on for another four years and, as a 31-year-old, carried the flag at the Opening Ceremony in Mexico City and won gold and silver medals. Endo then retired -- but was back in Munich four years later as Japan's team manager. The movie is set in chaotic 1920's China, when warlords fought each other for power while Sun Yat-Sen's underground movement tried to establish a democratic republic. The movie tells the story of three young women and two young men who are thrown together. One young woman grabs a box of jewels during the looting when one warlord takes Peking. A deserting soldier joins her, but the jewels end up at the Peking Opera. Here we meet the daughter of the head of the troupe, who dreams of being an actress. But even female roles are played by men in the opera. Soon, the daughter of the currently ruling warlord and a male agent of the democratic underground are involved.

During the flyweight category tournament of the boxing competition at the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games, Kim Kwang-sun had stormed through the draw with a run of commanding victories including a domineering 5-0 victory over American Arthur Johnson in the third round. In the final he was pitted against European champion Andrews Tews from East Germany, who four years later would win featherweight gold at the Barcelona Games in 1992. Tews had inflicted a rare victory on Kim in 1987 but in the gold medal bout the South Korean put in a fine display of sustained aggression. Kim was awarded a 4-1 victory to the delight of the home fans. Kim went on to enjoy a short professional career but it will be for his positive approach and focus at the 1988 Games that he will best be remembered for. The Lake Placid Games were the Olympic debut of Soviet cross-country skier Nikolay Zimyatov. Aged 24, he had won a silver medal at the World Championships in 1978, but wasn't a clear favourite for a medal two years later. Still, Zimyatov managed to overcome the competition and win all three cross-country events. He began by taking gold in the 30 kilometre race, which he would defend four years later in Sarajevo. Two days later, he ended in fourth place in the 15 kilometre race and bounced back by taking gold in the 50km race. Zimyatov won his third medal as he anchored the Soviet team in the 4x10km relay. With that result Nikolay Zimyatov repeated the feat of fellow soviet Galina Kulakova winning three cross-country skiing gold medals in the same Olympic Winter Games (http://youtu.be/OZjFXNtcDh0), and become the first man to do so. When Harold Osborn sustained a severe eye injury as a teenager, it put a huge dent into his potential athletic career as he became unable to judge distances easily. It was a condition which made his later success in the decathlon, where skill, precision, endurance and raw speed are put to their most severe test, all the more surprising. And for an athlete who finds it difficult to assess and perceive objects, it's hard to imagine a more difficult event to succeed in than the high jump. Raised on an Illinois farm in an athletics-keen family, Osborn had always been encouraged to jump, run, leap further and faster than all of his school friends. He enjoyed a massively successful collegiate career and went to Paris as the favourite in the high jump but as something of an unknown quantity in the decathlon. The high jump turned into a one-man show. He cleared every height using an accurately measured run-up which helped him assess the precise moment he should execute his leap. In a whirl of arms and legs he set an Olympic record of 6ft 6ins which would remain unbeaten until Berlin 12 years later.
