📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe In the road cycling event at the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games Mario Zanin came out on top in what became a mass race to the finish with no clear leaders in the race, relive the event with these classic highlights. The road race at the Tokyo Games was already predicted to be a closely-bunched finish, because the 24km circuit was not believed to be arduous. And so it proved, with most of the riders still in contention for a medal as the race entered its eighth and final lap. The peloton had not been broken. There were attempts from various riders to forge a breakaway, including one from the sport's upcoming star, the Belgian teenager Eddie Merckx, but none succeeded. Merckx only managed to generate a gap of around 25m before he was caught by the pack. And so, as they headed towards the finishing line, the gold medal really was up for grabs. The cyclists had been on the road for nearly 200km now, but it was clear that victory would go to whoever of them was able to produce a sprint when it really counted. The stage was set for a truly spectacular finish. As the finishing line approached, one rider nosed ahead from the pack. There were probably only 20m or 30m to go when Mario Zanin, a mechanic from Treviso in Italy, took the lead, but he did so at the most important moment. As the field swept across the line, it was his front wheel that - just - reached the line first. That was the margin of victory - Zanin's front wheel. Behind him, the placings were proving difficult to decide. Kjell Akerstrom Rodian of Denmark had clearly taken silver, just 0.02secs behind, but after that many cyclists were almost impossible to separate. The blanket nature of the finish made it incredibly difficult to divide rider from rider. Eventually Walter Godefroot, Merckx's Belgian teammate, was awarded silver, 0.11secs behind Zanin. The same time was awarded to the next 25 finishers. The Iranian athlete Sayed Esmail Hosseini, who finished just 0.2secs behind Zanin, was classified in 99th position, despite being less than a tenth of a second away from the podium. It was to be 24-year-old Zanin's only Olympic Games, but he will always be remembered as the man who fought through one of the closest mass finishes in Olympic history. Sometimes sport throws up events so remarkable that they wouldn't be out of place in the plot of a Hollywood film. Over the years, the Olympic Games has often been the stage for such dramas and, on the final day of Vancouver 2010, fans across the world were treated to yet another storyline that will go down in Olympic - and Canadian - history. But even the most imaginative Hollywood scriptwriter would have struggled to match the drama that unfolded at Canada Hockey Place, as the hosts and the USA contested the final of the men's ice hockey. A Jonathan Toews goal in the first period, and Corey Perry's strike in the second, had given Canada a 2-0 lead, but Ryan Kesler struck back to set up a tense third period, as the hosts sought to win a record eighth ice hockey gold and the USA went in search of their first Olympic title since 1980. With Canada still leading 2-1 - and with just 90 seconds remaining in the third period - the USA replaced goalkeeper Ryan Miller with an extra attacker as they chased an elusive equaliser. The hosts were forced into some frantic defending as the clock ticked down, but their resolve - and the hearts of millions of Canadian fans - was finally broken with just 24 seconds left, as Zach Parise slotted home to take the game into overtime. Each team was reduced to four outfield players for the extra 20-minute period and the game became far more open as the sides went in search of a winning sudden-death goal. And, after just eight minutes, the moment came for someone to etch their name into the history books. Fittingly, the opening fell to Canadian idol Sidney Crosby, who had missed an earlier one-on-one opportunity to put his side 3-1 up at the end of the third period. The NHL superstar had been relatively quiet throughout the tournament, but, when the chance came to cement his position in Canadian hockey folklore, he wasn't going to fluff his lines again. Receiving the puck from Jarome Iginla, Crosby took a quick touch before firing low past Miller, prompting wild celebrations across the country. It's one of sport's crying injustices that American swimmer Matt Biondi is remembered as much for one infamous defeat as he is for his phenomenal Olympic success. His tally of seven medals at a single Games has been bettered only by the great Michael Phelps and he was unquestionably one of the standout male athletes of the 1988 Games in Seoul. However a stunning loss in the 100m butterfly, when a horribly mistimed lunge for the finishing wall allowed Suriname's fast-finishing Anthony Nesty to win gold, lingers long in the memory. Biondi's first taste of Olympic success had come at Los Angeles in 1984 when he helped the 4x100m freestyle relay to gold. The 19-year-old Californian's potential was evident. His Seoul campaign opened in solid fashion with bronze in the 200m butterfly, and then followed the defeat by Nesty. Biondi's narrowest of defeats prompted the American to ponder whether he should have grown his fingernails longer, but he would have his revenge with five pulsating gold medals. Biondi showed his explosive pace by capturing 50m and 100m freestyle golds and helped the medley relay and 4x200 freestyle relay teams to victory too. But it was in the cavalry charge of the 4x100m relay that he really set himself apart. The quartet of Christopher Jacobs, Troy Dalbey, Thomas Jager and anchorman Biondi looked the standout favourites as the teams prepared for the start. The opening two legs saw the Americans surge into a slight lead but a brilliant third leg from Nikolai Yevseyev brought the Russians to neck and neck as the final swimmers entered the water. Biondi put the result beyond any doubt with a powerhouse opening 50m, and extended his lead on the return as the Americans knocked over half a second off the world record. His split time was astonishingly sub 48 seconds and his place in Olympic history was assured. Biondi would add two more relay golds in Barcelona in 1992 before taking up a career in teaching. When Evelin Schlaak came out of nowhere to win the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Montreal in 1976, she not only crushed her East German team mates but also left the world's best trailing in her wake. She had barely turned 20 yet stunned the crowd in Canada with an Olympic record throw of 69 metres to capture the gold medal. Her success was dismissed as a flash in the pan by some of the media in her homeland, and the coverage only added fuel to her desire to retain the title at the Olympic Games in Moscow four years later. She got married and enjoyed a succession of promotions in the East German army, but gold in Moscow was the focal point of her training regime. She snared her second major world title at the World Cup, again in Moscow, and as the Games neared it was clear the spoils were going to be fought for by her and Bulgaria's Maria Petkova. Having finished World Cup runner-up in Moscow, Petkova seized the world record and went into the heart of battle at the Grand Arena as the slight favourite. Schlaak, now competing under the married name of Jahl, qualified with the minimum of effort, just clearing the 60-metre mark with her best throw. Petkova sent an effort over 65 metres to go through and the scene was set for a terrific showdown. However, Jahl produced a sequence of throws never seen before in Olympic competition, recording the four biggest efforts in the event. She won with yet another Olympic record mark of 69.96 metres, with Petkova again having to settle for the silver medal. Jahl retired two years later. At the Torino 2006 Olympic Games, the Swedish team was the favourite for the title. After the first round, the Scandinavians were first in the rankings, with seven victories in nine matches. Qualified for the semi-final, the Swedes faced their Norwegian neighbours, who had beaten them 10-3 in the round robin stage. This time, the match was very close. In the eighth end, the Norwegian player missed her shot, aimed at producing a double take-out of the Swedish stones. The Swedes were a hair's breadth from elimination. In the last end, Anette Norberg played the advantage perfectly, taking out the opponents' last two stones, thus leading her team to the final. Sweden won 5-4. In the gold medal match against Switzerland, the teams exchanged blow for blow. Although Sweden was leading by two points, the Swiss equalised in the 10th end. In the last end, Swiss skip Mirjam Ott managed a perfect delivery, playing two stones in the house. Anette Norberg had no choice -- she had only one stone left and could not risk making a mistake. She had to take out the two Swiss stones and get her own one into the house if she wanted to win gold. She pulled it off perfectly! Her team and she were Olympic champions. Before becoming an international legend, Mark Spitz made his Olympic debut at the Mexico 1968 Games. Still, even for one of the most iconic swimmers ever, things don't always go as planned. The American swimmer had brashly predicted that he would win six gold medals at the 1968 Mexico City Games. Although he did take home two gold medals from the relays, he performed well below expectations in his individual races.
