Flight Delays and Crash Fears: Is US Air Travel Safe?
The current US air traffic control system is under strain, seeing more tarmac delays year after year, and a slew of high-profile plane crashes in the past year. Former US Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao says the US still has “the safest system in the world” and is “considered the gold standard” for aviation, but does admit that technological changes need to keep up with the times. National Business Aviation Association President and CEO Edward Bolen agrees that the US “needs to invest in people, facilities and equipment so they can respond in a dynamic way.” Heather Krause of the GAO breaks down ways to mitigate air travel risk. -------- More on Bloomberg Television and Markets Like this video? Daley Thompson Wins Second Decathlon Gold - Los Angeles 1984 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Relive the moment Great Britain's Daley Thompson won the decathlon gold medal at the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games to retain his Olympic title in these amazing highlights. Daley Thompson won his first Olympic gold at the 1980 Moscow Games. Four years later, he returned to defend his title in Los Angeles. In his way stood his great rival, Jürgen Hingsen of West Germany. For the first seven events, little separated Thompson and Hingsen as they battled for first place. But Thompson pulled away with strong performances in the pole vault and the javelin. With the gold medal secure, Thompson needed to run the final event, the 1500m, in 4m34.98s to break Hingsen's world record. Yet Thompson eased up at the finish line and stopped the clock at 4m35.00s! Two years later, IAAF officials reviewed the photo timer results and discovered that Thompson had completed the 110m hurdles one hundredth of a second quicker than initially recorded. They added one more point to his Olympic total and he was given a belated share of the world record. This record would stand for nine years, and it was only at the 2004 Athens Games that it was bettered by Roman Sebrle of the Czech Republic. How Much of a National Security Threat Is TikTok to the US?
After a second 75-day extension to TikTok’s sell-or-ban affair, we take a look at TikTok from a national security standpoint. Former president of the Council on Foreign Relations Richard Haass says that “Tiktok America is the equivalent of drinking several cans of soda a day” and that Americans should be concerned about vulnerabilities that are exposed through its data. Cato Institute’s Jennifer Huddleston poses the question of whether this is more about TikTok’s ties to China or how young people's use social media makes older generations uncomfortable. -------- Like this video? Dan Jansen Breaks His Jynx To Win Gold - Lillehammer 1994 Winter Olympic
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe After numerous Olympic set backs Dan Jansen finally breaks his jynx to win gold at the Lillehammer 1994 Winter Olympic Games. By the time of the Lillehammer Games, in 1994 Dan Jansen had won seven overall World Cup titles and set seven world records. However at the Olympics he had experienced nothing but disappointment. After finishing fourth at 500m in 1984, Jansen was one of the favourites in 1988. But on the morning of the 500m, his sister died of leukemia. Jansen tried to race anyway, but fell. He fell again in the 1,000m. In 1992 he was again a favorite, but could do no better than fourth in the 500 and 26th in the 1,000. In Lillehammer, Jansen was the overwhelming favourite at 500m, but he slipped and finished eighth. Despite his great non-Olympic success, Jansen had never won an Olympic medal despite competing in seven Olympic races over a ten-year period. His last chance was the 1,000m, a distance at which six of his opponents had better times. Jansen was on world record pace when he slipped during the penultimate turn. Fortunately, he steadied himself and powered on to set a new world record (1:12.43) and win a gold Olympic medal at last. Civil Engineer Wins Biathlon Gold - Halvard Hanevold | Nagano 1998 Winter Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe The Biathlon is an event that requires immense skill, composure and stamina, all of which are showcased by Halvard Hanevold in these highlights on his way to Olympic gold at the Nagano 1998 Winter Olympics. Practising biathlon requires very diverse qualities: excellent physical capacities of endurance, along with intense concentration and extreme precision when getting into position for the shooting section. Indeed, it is not easy to keep cool to aim at a target when your heart is beating fast. These are qualities which Halvard Hanevold developed throughout his long career. This civil engineer qualified in building machinery and tools was able to apply a scientific and methodical approach to his sports performance. This is certainly what enabled him to remain, for more than 15 years, an essential, yet discreet, figure in the world of biathlon. His first steps into the world of Olympism were taken at home in Norway in 1994, at the Lillehammer Games. He very quickly became a pillar of the relay team, in which he amassed many rewards (he was a four-time world champion). He was always the first athlete in the relay. A fine tactician and good shooter, he launched his team onto the road to success. In 1998, he became Olympic champion for the first time, winning the 20km. A few days later, with the Norwegian relay team, he was beaten by five seconds and won silver.
