Inspired by the 1956 Melbourne Games in his home country, Herb Elliot began training with coach Percy Cerutti with the 1960 Olympic Games in mind. By 1958, Elliott had already won the Commonwealth Games and established two world records in the 1,500 metres and the mile. Having also an unbeaten record in both those distances, it was clear that, even before the Rome 1960 Olympic Games began, Herb Elliott was already the 1,500 metres favourite. During the race, Elliott started at the back, letting other competitors take the initial lead. Just short of 500 metres to go, he took the lead and left people wondering only if Elliott would break his own record as he won the race. Herb Elliott won the Olympic gold medal with a world record time of 3:35.6, being considered at the time the greatest middle distance runner ever. He retired from athletics in that same year, at the age of 22, maintaining his unbeaten record. Vreni Schneider, the daughter of a village shoemaker in Switzerland, first competed in the Olympics in Calgary 1988. As she describes it, she was so nervous before the race that she woke up at five o'clock on the day of her first race, the giant slalom. After her first run, Vreni Schneider was only in fifth place and need a fantastic second run to get an Olympic medal. And that she did. With an amazing run, she jumped to first place and won her first Olympic gold medal. Two days later it was time for the slalom. Boosting with confidence from her first Olympic gold, Vreni Schneider went directly into first place already in the first run. As was characteristic in her career she took even higher risks during the second run and kept first place. She was now, double Olympic champion. During the following season, 1988-1989, Schneider won fourteen World Cup races to set a single season record that still stands. She was injured during the Albertville 1992 Games, but came back for Lillehammer 1994, where she won gold, silver and bronze medals. 📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Experience the incredible story of WW2 soldiers Ran Laurie and Jack Wilson, who were unable to compete at the 1940 and 1944 Games due to military service yet returned to win gold in the London 1948 Olympic Games. Ran Laurie and Jack Wilson were British establishment through and through. University friends who first met at Cambridge, the pair rowed together in The Boat Race, the annual rowing duel between Oxford and its historic rivals Cambridge, from 1934 to 1936. Laurie competed in the 1936 Olympic Games, as stroke, but Britain missed out on a medal as the boat came home fourth. Laurie was later to suggest that if Wilson had been in the boat, they would have won. The pair won the prestigious Silver Goblets trophy at the Henley Royal Regatta in 1938, but the Second World War denied them the chance at competing at either a 1940 or 1944 Games. Instead, both went on to work together as part of the British Civil Service in Sudan, where, not surprisingly, they failed to find decent facilities to keep up with their rowing. After the end of the war, and despite not touching an oar for ten years, they returned from Sudan to prepare to compete once again at Henley in 1948. They trained for six weeks and again won the Silver Goblets. Their selection for the Olympic team was now a formality. A month later, the so-called "Desert Rats" finally got their Olympic chance in the coxless pairs. Laurie described it as "the best row we ever had". The pair took the lead just after halfway and were never seriously challenge. The Swiss Kalt brothers did launch a late attack, but it didn't affect the result, with the British winning by a clear margin of almost three seconds. After their victory, both Wilson and Laurie continued working for the Colonial Service for another six years. In later life, Jack Wilson worked in the steel industry, while Ran Laurie qualified as a doctor. His younger son, Hugh Laurie, is an internationally-known actor and comedian who himself also took part in the Boat Race. Anthony Nesty was brought up in a country whose population was a little over 350,000 and boasted just one 50-metre swimming pool. The lack of facilities and competition forced him to relocate to the United States where he trained at the University of Florida. He failed to qualify for the 100m butterfly final at Los Angeles in 1984 but he gradually started the improvement which moved him into the world class bracket. Nesty won the gold at his specialist event at the 1987 Pan-American Games but by the time the Seoul final came around he raced in the shadow of American Golden Boy Matt Biondi. Biondi would leave South Korea with five gold medals but a sixth had looked a certainty as he stormed into a sizeable lead in the closing stages of the 100m butterfly at the Jamsil swimming arena. Yet the American timed his surge for the wall poorly, choosing to glide rather than kick from some distance out, allowing Nesty to touch home first by one hundredth of a second. Neither swimmer could believe the scoreboard when they looked up, with Nesty having recorded a new Olympic record time of 53 seconds dead. Thousands lined the streets of Suriname to greet their conquering hero; a new set of coins and postage stamps commemorated his achievement, a plane was named after him and even a local sports stadium. His star shone brightly, but briefly. He won the world title in 1991 and after claiming a defiant bronze in the 1992 Barcelona Games he focused on swimming for the Florida Gators, for whom he has since become a distinguished coach. He took up various coaching roles for his country and was even granted the honour of leading out the team at the 2008 Games opening ceremony in Beijing. Long jumper Edward Hamm had taken the classic collegiate route to Olympic success, winning the Arkansas state title for three years in a row as well as collecting a litany of sprint titles along the way. He narrowly failed to qualify for the 1924 Games in Paris, bouts of malaria curbing his fitness and training regimes quite severely, but he booked his place at the Amsterdam Games in emphatic style. In 1928 he became the national intercollegiate title before smashing the world record in the Olympic trials with a leap of 7.90m, a mark which would challenge many a national record to this day. Come the day of competition, the event was seen as a contest between Hamm and the Haitian leaper Sylvio Cator. The pair was well clear of the field in qualifying, Hamm edging it with a leap of 7.73m, over a foot clear of the third-placed qualifier. The effort was even greater when considering that Hamm took a sharp sidestep midway through his run-up to avoid a rut in the cinder track leading to the pit. The qualifying leaps were carried through to the final back then, and it proved sufficient for the American to claim the gold. It was slim consolation for Cator, who a matter of days later broke the world record and become the first man to break the 26-foot barrier. The Sapporo 1972 Games put high expectations on the Japanese team to perform once again at a home Winter Games. The individual events had given the hosts medals one medal in each of the three colours out of six possible medals (with Kazuyoshi Funaki taking the large hill gold), but hadn't yet offered the public with the same spectacular display as the Japanese clean sweep in Sapporo. Still, there was one event left which was not feature on the Olympic programme until the 1988 Winter Games: the team large hill competition. Four years earlier, Japan had won the ski jumping team silver medal in Lillehammer after having an early lead, leaving the public anxious for a better result. Once again the pressure was on Masahiko Harada who was considered responsible for the unfulfilling result in 1994. This time there were no doubts that Harada - alongside Takanobu Okabe, Hiroya Saito and Kazuyoshi Funaki - had delivered as Japan took the gold medal to the delight of the 40,000 fans present at the venue. Mary Lou Retton came to win Olympic gold in the All Around event however, Szabo's fantastic performance crowned her Olympic champion in the Balance Beam, the Vault and the Floor exercises. She also was part of the Romanian team, also winning gold. The film centers on the aftermath of a horrific massacre where five college students were brutally murdered inside an abandoned home. Detective Mark Lewis (Frank Grillo) and psychologist Dr. Elizabeth Klein (Maria Bello) question one of the few survivors who explains they were amateur ghost-hunters, seeking out paranormal phenomenon at the abandoned house, which was believed to be haunted. But what started out as a harmless activity turned into something truly terrifying.
