Before becoming an international legend, Mark Spitz made his Olympic debut at the Mexico 1968 Games. Still, even for one of the most iconic swimmers ever, things don't always go as planned. The American swimmer had brashly predicted that he would win six gold medals at the 1968 Mexico City Games. Although he did take home two gold medals from the relays, he performed well below expectations in his individual races. His worst result at the Mexico Games was last place in the final of the 200m butterfly. As disappointing as his results might have been, he still won two individual medals, taking third in the 100m freestyle and winning silver in the 100m butterfly, second to fellow American swimmer Douglas Russell. Four years later, at the Munich 1972 Games, Spitz would become the most successful swimmer in a single edition of the Olympic Games only to be surpassed 36 years later by Michael Phelps, at the Beijing 2008 Olympics. This was the first time volleyball had been included in the Olympic programme, and it was keenly anticipated by the home supporters. The Japanese men took bronze, behind the dominant Soviet Union, but the home nation was more focused on Japan's women's volleyball team. Ten members of the team worked at the same spinning mill near Osaka. The team's coach, Hirofumi Daimatsu, also worked there, where he was in charge of buying office supplies. Such an ordinary exterior hid a man of extraordinary determination. His training techniques bordered on the extreme. Players were taunted and forced to train almost every day of the year, but Daimatsu also created new tactics that have survived to this day. He crafted a highly successful team that captured the fascination of the Japanese public. They were expected to win, and to win with style. They obliged by dropping just one set in the whole tournament, a narrow 15-13 reverse at the hands of Poland. Even then, there was a reason - that set was conceded only after Daimatsu had taken some of his best players off the court in order to frustrate the watching Soviet scouts. In the final match, the women played the USSR. The Soviet team actually reached the final with a superior record, with four victories and no sets conceded, but the match did not turn out to be the classic that neutrals might have hoped for. Instead, the Japanese were dominant from beginning to end, winning 3-0. For the home fans, though, it was exactly the result they had hoped for. The women's triumph was watched by 80% of the country on TV. After the Olympic Games were over, the team's captain, Masae Kasai, met the Prime Minister. She mentioned that she could not meet a prospective husband because of the athletes' strict training regime. He sympathised, set her up on a date with a man named Kazuo Nakamura - and the two went on to marry. Ann Curtis was born in San Francisco and was taught to swim by nuns at her convent school. When she showed great talent, her coaching switched to Charlie Sava, at the Crystal Splash club, one of the best known and most highly regarded coaches of the time. There were tensions, at least initially, and Curtis was kicked off the team at least one, but she learned her lessons, persevered, and improved dramatically. Over the course of the 1940s, Curtis was one of the world's outstanding freestyle swimmers. National achievements came regularly - she took 31 national titles, and came to break four world records and no fewer than 56 American records. But the pinnacle of it all came in 1948. In London, Curtis won two gold medals. She set an Olympic record in the 400m Freestyle on her way to victory over Denmark's Karen-Margrete Harup by more than three seconds, and Gold came again in the 4x100m Relay, in which Curtis's performance on the anchor leg proved decisive. There was also a silver medal from the 100m Freestyle, where she was edged out by Greta Andersen. She left London as the most decorated female swimmer of the Games and returned home as one of America's best known sporting competitors. She retired from competition after the Olympic Games, and turned to coaching instead. Enrico Fabris started skating at the age of six in his local club in Roana. When he was 22 years old he joined the police force and became a member of Fiamme Oro (Golden Flames), the famous state police sports group. At the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Games, Fabris came 16th in the 5000m and 26th in the 1500m. But he was improving rapidly and went on to win at the Innsbruck Winter University Games in 2005. In 2006, Fabris marked his arrival as a major force with his first victories in the World Cup. Later, at the Torino Winter Games, Fabris claimed an unexpected bronze medal in the 5000m event. This bronze medal was Italy's first Olympic medal in this discipline. Five days later, the Olympic Games' first ever team pursuit event was held. Led by Fabris, the Italian relay team overcame the Dutch, who were hot favourites, and went on to beat the Canadians to win gold in front of their home crowd. Fabris completed a memorable Olympic Games by winning his second gold in the 1500m, his favourite event. No matter how much an athlete might train for the Olympic Games, many of them also have specific rituals and lucky charms which help build their confidence. From the first Games of the Modern Era to the latest Games of the 20th century, there are many stories like that. William Petterson's participation at the Antwerp Games left us one of these stories. Just before he took this first try in the long jump competition, Petterson found a coin in the runaway, which he then decided to put in his left shoe, hoping for good luck. If the coin influenced or not his performance, we will never know, however, with the coin in his shoe, the Swedish athlete achieved 7.15 metres and won the Olympic gold medal. At the Innsbruck 1976 Olympic Winter Games, Bill Koch first gained people's attention by using an innovative skiing technique which applied movements similar to those used in speed skating. Though he might not have developed the technique, his performance at the Games did much to spread it around the world of cross-country skiing. As he won the silver medal in the Men's 30 kilometres mass start event - behind soviet Sergey Savelyev - Bill Koch became the first American cross-country skier to win an Olympic medal. Rabobank FX Strategy Head Jane Foley discusses the role of the US dollar as a reserve currency. Speaking on Bloomberg Television, she says since days of the first Donald Trump administration, there have been "changes" to make other currencies "a little bit more resilient." The absence of the American contingent from the Olympic Games in Moscow did little to lessen the tension and air of expectancy before track and field's blue riband event, the men's 100m. With the likes of Stanley Floyd and Harvey Glance being forced to watch from home in the United States, the favourites after the early rounds appeared to be Cuban Silvio Leonard, Italian floater Pietro Mennea and Pole Marian Woronin. The fact that Scotland's Wells was there at all was something of a minor miracle. The powerful Scot had been subjected to a barrage of propaganda, some from the British government itself, attempting to persuade him to join the boycott. He went to Russia on the back of some excellent form: he had won the 200m Commonwealth Games gold in Alberta in 1978 and was the British champion over 100m and 200m. While the likes of Mennea floated over the ground, Wells was a powerhouse sprinter. Barrel-chested and rippling with muscle, Wells possessed a raw power and an iron will which would prove formidable. He broke the British record in the quarter-final, and his increasingly impressive performances saw him reach the final as one of the favourites. In his way lay the mercurial Leonard, the multiple Pan-American Games champion. The two key protagonists were unusually drawn on the inside and outside lanes for the final and with 60 metres of the race over, it was clearly a two-horse race. Wells looked to have edged clear when he started an extraordinarily early dip for the line. Leonard seemed to strike back in the closing strides, but with both men given the same time it was Wells who won the gold on a photo finish. He remains the last white athlete to win the men's 100m at the Olympic Games, and was the first Briton to win gold since Harold Abrahams back at the 1924 Games in Paris. Wells missed out by a whisker on a memorable 100-200m double when the elegant Mennea pipped him at the line in the 200m final. A matter of days after the Games, Wells accepted an offer to run against the best America could offer and in Koblenz went some way to showing he was the world's fastest man by beating Floyd, Glance and a young Carl Lewis.
