Eric Lemming Wins First Olympic Javelin Gold - Stockholm 1912 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Javelin made it's Olympic debut at the Stockholm 1912 Olympic Games and it was the hometown boy Eric Lemming who won gold in the event, setting his 10th world record in the event in the process. Eric Lemming was nineteen years old when he set a world record of 49.31m in the javelin throw in 1899. Unfortunately, javelin throw was not included in the Olympic programme in 1900, but Lemming travelled to Paris anyway and took part in six events, placing fourth in the high jump, the pole vault and the hammer throw and eighth in the discus throw. The javelin throw was finally accepted as an Olympic event in 1908, at which time Lemming was still the world record holder. Lemming won the freestyle javelin event (after which it was dropped from the program) and then set another world record (54.825m) in winning the regular javelin event by more than four metres. At the age of 32, Lemming made a final appearance at the 1912 Olympic Games, which were held in his home country of Sweden. Lemming rose to the occasion, earning the gold medal by making the first javelin throw to exceed 60m, a feat that led the appreciative crowd to give him a standing ovation. Later in the Games in Stockholm, he placed fourth in a one-time event in which the competitors threw the javelin with each hand, and he competed in a similar event with the discus. During his career, Lemming set ten javelin world records, culminating in a 1912 post-Olympic throw of 62.32m. Trump Freezes $2 Billion in Funding for Harvard
The Trump administration is freezing over $2-billion dollars in federal funding for Harvard University. It happened after the elite college rejected a list of demands from the government that were said to be designed to fight antisemitism on campus. The president of Harvard says the requests crossed red lines regarding academic freedom and interference in higher education. Wendy Schiller, Director of the Taubman Center for American Politics and Policy at Brown University joined Bloomberg Open Interest to talk about why she was so surprised by Harvard's swift reaction to the White House and the implications for higher education. -------- More on Bloomberg Television and Markets Like this video? Big Bank Earnings, GM Trends Down, Boeing and the Trade War
- Bank of America (BAC) is higher this morning after it reported strong earnings with big bank earnings wrapping up this week. Chairman and CEO Brian Moynihan also said that the bank will have to potentially face changing economic conditions. - General Motors (GM) is selling off after yesterday's gains that came when President Trump signaled he's looking to pause auto tariffs so car companies can adjust to the duties. The president says the automakers will "need a little more time" to adjust to manufacturing auto parts in the US. - Boeing (BA) is lower this morning on a headline that China has ordered its airlines to stop taking deliveries of Boeing jets and to halt purchases of aircraft-related equipment and parts from US companies. The move is seen as part of the ongoing trade war between the US and China, with China imposing retaliatory tariffs of 125% on American goods, including aircraft and parts. -------- Watch Bloomberg Radio LIVE on YouTube Weekdays 7am-6pm ET WATCH HERE: http://bit.ly/3vTiACF Follow us on X: https://twitter.com/BloombergRadio Subscribe to our Podcasts: Bloomberg Daybreak: http://bit.ly/3DWYoAN Bloomberg Surveillance: http://bit.ly/3OPtReI Bloomberg Intelligence: http://bit.ly/3YrBfOi Balance of Power: http://bit.ly/3OO8eLC Bloomberg Businessweek: http://bit.ly/3IPl60i Listen on Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with the Bloomberg Business app: Apple CarPlay: https://apple.co/486mghI Android Auto: https://bit.ly/49benZy Visit our YouTube channels: Bloomberg Podcasts: https://www.youtube.com/bloombergpodcasts Bloomberg Television: https://www.youtube.com/@markets Bloomberg Originals: https://www.youtube.com/bloomberg Quicktake: https://www.youtube.com/@BloombergQuicktake

Loukola Beats The Legendary Paavo Nurmi To Steeplechase Gold - Amsterdam 1928 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Toivo Loukola of Finland defeats the great Paavo Nurmi to win gold in the 3000m steeplechase event at the Amsterdam 1928 Olympic Games. It says everything about the balance power in the distance running events at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam that four of the nine finalists in the men's 3,000m steeplechase were from Finland. Led by the legendary Paavo Nurmi, Finnish runners were the dominant force at the Amsterdam Games and he was expected to add to his bulging haul of gold. Nurmi had won five gold medals at the Paris Games four years earlier but was absent from the 10,000m after Finnish officials said he was competing in too many events. However in Amsterdam his programme was curtailed and he opened his campaign by winning the 10,000m in an Olympic record time, eight years after first winning the event in Antwerp. When the heats of the steeplechase came round a week later, Nurmi was again expected to prevail but a spectacular fall nearly put paid to his chances. He was helped up from his fall by Lucien Duquesne and in return Nurmi paced the remainder of the race to help the Frenchman qualify. Team-mate Toivo Loukola, who had once been declared unfit for military service by the Finnish army because of breathing problems, qualified some 20 seconds faster than Nurmi and lined up with a cavalry charge of Finnish team mates. He controlled the race from the very beginning and although Nurmi kept in touch for much of the race he applied the pressure in the closing 800m -- often taking off and landing on the same foot. His time of nine minutes 21.8secs was a new world record, finishing some 10 seconds clear of Nurmi and Over Andersen who completed a Finnish clean sweep in third.
