The 22-year-old Cuban javelin thrower, Maria Colon had been competing effectively at junior level and claimed her first major international success at the Pan American Games the year before Moscow. Yet it was two Eastern European throwers who were dominating the world scene. East Germany's Ruth Fuchs and Tatyana Biryulina of Russia were seemingly exchanging the world record at will in the months leading up to the Olympic Games. As it turned out, both recorded disappointing performances in the heat of the final at Moscow's Grand Arena. Fuchs seemed to be the model of confidence in qualifying with the second largest throw of the preliminary round, while Colon eased through with an effort of 62.42m. But with Fuchs troubled by a nagging back injury and Biryulina missing her best form, it was left to the elegant Cuban to take the plaudits. She opened the competition with an effort that would not be surpassed. Her first round throw of 68.40m was an Olympic record, and none of the 12-woman field got close. Colon held on for her first gold medal, with Russian Saida Gunba some 64cms back in the silver medal position. East Germany's Ute Hommola took the bronze. Biryulina finished sixth, with Fuchs eighth. Buster Mathis had been picked for the US boxing team on the basis of an excellent amateur record. He was to become a very good heavyweight boxer, but not one of the greats. Fate had that in mind for others. And so it was that Mathis broke his thumb shortly before the Olympic Games, and so his place in the team went to a reserve -- Joe Frazier. The man who fate had planned for Frazier was destined for legendary status. He is now considered one of the 10 greatest heavyweights of all time, and his professional contests against Muhammad Ali and George Foreman have become some of the most discussed and written-about fights of all time. It's hard to think of that golden era of boxing, and not think of "The Thriller in Manila", for instance, of the much-hyped and even more applauded "Fight of the Century". And yet in Tokyo, Frazier was much less well-known, at least at the start. In the first round, though, he announced his intentions with a first-round knockout of Uganda's George Oywello. His next opponent, the Australian Athol McQueen, floored Frazier in the first round, but the American recovered to stop his opponent. By now Frazier was the only American boxer left, and in the semi-finals he came up against the towering Soviet Vadim Yemelyanov. Despite the size difference -- the Russian was around 12cm taller -- Frazier won by knock-out in the second round. By then, though, he had felt a tremendous pain in his left hand. Like Mathis before the Games, Frazier had a broken thumb. He was determined to fight for gold, though. He told nobody about the injury and stepped into the ring the next day to face the German Hans Huber, a bus mechanic who had really wanted to qualify as a wrestler, in the final. The normally devastating left hook was, predictably, not as powerful, but Frazier fought cleverly, favoured his right much more than normal, and dug into his reserves of strength. He was rewarded with a 3-2 judges' decision. The gold was his -- greatness lay ahead. Six years later, he was world champion. Scandinavian dominance in the javelin had long been the preserve of the Finns yet at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam it was an agile Swede who took the plaudits. Using an explosive run-up and whiplash action not dissimilar to the leading throwers of today, Erik Lundqvist looked full of confidence in the competition's four-group format. Favourite for the event had been Finn Eino Penttila but the occasion got to him and all he could muster was a throw good enough for sixth place. A sign painter by trade, Lundqvist sent the javelin out to an Olympic record distance of 66.60m, well over a metre clear of his nearest rival, the Hungarian Bela Szepes. With the neat touch of miniature national flags marking the competitors' best throws, the blue and yellow of Sweden stood some distance ahead of its rivals. The versatile Szepes had represented Hungary at the Winter Olympics in Chamonix four years earlier but had failed to win a medal in the Nordic Combined. Lundqvist won gold at the age of 20 years and a month to become the youngest person to ever win gold in the event. Thirteen days later he became the first man in history to break the 70m landmark when he threw 71.01m, breaking the record set by Penttila. His was one of seven Swedish golds in Amsterdam, leaving them fifth in the overall medals table. Prior to the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games, the women's marathon had never featured in the modern Olympics. It was also seldom run earlier in the century mainly due to health fears. After concerns had been raised at the Amsterdam 1928 Games, the longest distance available for women's athletics had varied from 100m to 800m up to the Moscow 1980 Games. At the Los Angeles Olympics, however the longest race of them all was installed into the 1984 programme as well as the 1500m, 3000m and the 400m hurdles.
