📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Highlights from the London 1948 Olympic Games as Mexico's Humberto Mariles Cortes and Ruben Uriza Castro win the gold medal in the equestrian jumping event. The Equestrian jumping competition at the London 1948 Olympic Games took place at what would now be considered a very unusual stadium, Wembley Stadium. The Prix des Nations - as it was called at the time - was rightly celebrated as the world's greatest show-jumping test for both man and horse. Over forty riders from fifteen nations competed on the thousand metre course with sixteen obstacles each with its own peculiar difficulties. After a fierce competition which included many refusals, falls but also fantastic performances, it was the Mexicans who dominated the events. In the Individual competition it was fellow countrymen Humberto Mariles Cortes (riding Arete) and Ruben Uriza Castro (his horse Hatvey) who took the top two positions on the podium for Mexico. Jean Francois d'Orgeix (with Sucre de Pomme) won bronze in third place. Mexico also won the team competition, staying ahead of the Spanish team in second place, and the British hosts who completed the podium taking the bronze medal. While Tokyo 1964 saw the final performances of the Soviet gymnastics legend Larissa Latynina at the Olympic Games, it also marked the rise of new upcoming star, Czechoslovakia's Vera Caslavska, who would also gain iconic status in her career. Latynina dominated women's gymnastics in her time, collecting 18 Olympic medals between 1956 and 1964. She was the only athlete in any sport to have won eighteen Olympic medals for almost 50 years, until no one less than Michael Phelps broke her record at the London 2012 Games. Though Caslavska had her Olympic debut at the Rome 1960 Games, it was only four years later in Tokyo that she made her mark as a prominent gymnast. Anita Lonsborough Sets 200m Backstroke World Record For Gold - Rome 1960 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe An amazing race takes place in the women's 200m backstroke event at the Rome 1960 Olympic Games as Great Britain's Anita Lonsborough sets a new world record, beating her German rival Wiltrud Urselmann to the Olympic gold medal. The stage was set. German swimmer Wiltrud Urselmann, the current world record holder for the women's 200m breaststroke was up against the previous record holder, Anita Lonsbrough from Great Britain. While Urselmann held the record for the event, Lonsborough had a history of beating her rival when they were placed head to head. At the Olympic Games, anything could happen. Knowing the nineteen year-old Brit was a very strong finisher, Urselmann began the race at a very strong pace to take the early lead. Lonsbrough only managed to caught up and pass Urselmann in the final 50 metres, with the German fighting back harder than in any previous race between the two of them. With an Olympic gold medal at stake, Lonsbrough also brought her greatest effort to final metres, becoming the new Olympic champion with a new record time of 2m49.5s. Anita Lonsbrough was the most famous British swimmer for decades, as the last British woman swimmer to win Olympic gold until Rebecca Adlington at the Beijing 2008 Games. Gold Prices Surge Again as Expanding Trade War Bolsters Haven Demand
Gold’s steady rise suggests it’s becoming the fallback asset of choice, with other havens failing to deliver as they once would. After breaking through the psychological barrier of $3,000, momentum has only increased. BlackRock's Evy Hambro says the precious metal is a wise choice for a store of wealth, arguing that if you could buy an Apple iPhone with gold, it would cost you 30% less today than it did when the first iPhone was first released, despite a retail price which has tripled. -------- More on Bloomberg Television and Markets Like this video?
