It is not easy being a woman in India; from birth to death discrimination and violence blight many of their lives due to an accident of birth. This beautiful and touching film explores womens place in today’s India. Starting with the village in Rajasthan where female infanticide is a tradition. Few dare to stand up to the men of this village who dictate that baby girls are too expensive and openly admit they don’t want women to be educated for fear of losing their power. The girls that survive childhood will often fall victim to domestic violence, we meet with one such woman back with her parents after escaping her abusive husband. Her family however is keen for her to reconcile with him as her presence brings them shame. The women who dare to stay single and go out at night unaccompanied are at risk of being raped and have very little chance of getting justice as the police often believe that her behaviour means she wanted it to happen. Lastly there are the widows, cast out from their families when their husbands die, with no one to look after them they survive by begging in the streets.

Leslie Palti-Guzman, Founder at Energy Vista, examines geopolitical risks to oil and gas production as Saudi Arabia announces production cuts. Oil smashed through $100 a barrel as Saudi Arabia joined other major Middle East producers in cutting output, with a standstill of tanker traffic through the vital Strait of Hormuz choking off supplies to the rest of the world.  Saudi Arabia is beginning to cut oil production as its storage tanks fill up, according to a person familiar with the situation, following similar moves in neighboring countries. The Kingdom has been diverting supplies via a pipeline to the western Red Sea port of Yanbu, but doesn’t have enough capacity to fully replace export volumes that typically transit through Hormuz.  The war in the Middle East is showing no signs of abating after US and Israeli strikes on Iran more than a week ago, and the fallout is stoking fears of an inflation crisis. The halt to shipping through Hormuz — a narrow waterway that normally handles a fifth of the world’s oil — along with attacks on key energy infrastructure have also driven up prices of natural gas and diesel. Jennifer Rie, Bloomberg Intelligence Senior Litigation Analyst, discusses the settlement reached between Live Nation and the Justice Department over alleged music industry monopolization. Live Nation Entertainment Inc. and its Ticketmaster subsidiary have reached a settlement with federal antitrust authorities, the Justice Department said Monday, throwing a wrench mid-trial into an antitrust case that accused the company of illegally monopolizing the live music industry. The agreement was announced Monday with no details provided. Bloomberg News previously reported that the sides were nearing a settlement that wouldn’t require Live Nation to sell its Ticketmaster subsidiary. Andrew Kline, a Justice Department lawyer, said that Live Nation and the federal government signed a binding preliminary agreement on Thursday evening. He didn’t disclose any details about the settlement terms, which still need to be finalized and then reviewed by Judge Arun Subramanian. Kline asked the court to pause the trial while the Justice Department works to create a final judgment in the case. News of the settlement drew criticism from Washington, DC, and states that had signed onto the Justice Department’s case. Adam Gitlin, an attorney for the DC attorney general, said that no states have officially signed on to the settlement agreement, and several, including Texas, are opposed. He asked the court for a mistrial. New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement that at least 25 states and DC will continue with the trial, along with New York. The settlement “fails to address the monopoly at the center of this case,” she said. “We cannot agree to it.” Subramanian castigated the Justice Department and the states for what he said was an “entirely unacceptable” process. The judge said the parties informed him on Friday about the possibility of a settlement, but failed to disclose that a binding preliminary agreement had already been executed. “There has been public reporting about the potential for settlement for a number of months,” the judge said. “You had the power to address it in a deliberate way, either during the trial or before the trial process and you didn’t.” -------- More on Bloomberg Television and Markets Like this video?
