Sierra Leone was one of the hardest hit countries when the Ebola epidemic struck West Africa in 2014. Now it is battling the coronavirus. The first case was confirmed on the 31 of March and since then the numbers have been climbing steadily. Tyson Conteh is a filmmaker in Makeni, a city in northern Sierra Leone. Yankuba is a young Gambian man who fled repression and made a perilous, life-threatening journey, across land and sea, to Europe. Once in Naples, he discovered a pernicious climate of racism and a slow and unhelpful immigration system. His only escape is a small underground club in the heart of the city called Teranga. It provides a rare safe space for migrants to dance and sing away the trauma of their journey to Europe and the discrimination they face in Italy. Many countries around the world are urging their citizens to wear face masks in public to protect themselves from coronavirus. This is despite the World Health Organization’s recommendation that they should only be used by medical workers, caregivers and those infected by the virus. Although medical experts say face masks do not provide effective protection, some countries have made it illegal to appear in public without wearing one. Many people are now using face masks made out of cloth. The big question is, how much protection do face masks offer and how can you tell an effective face mask from a fake one? In 2017 this troupe of Ghanaian pallbearers went viral following BBC Africa's coverage of their flamboyant coffin-carrying dances, garnering millions of views. Three years later and the group has experienced a second round of internet fame, with social media users adopting the troupe as a dark-humoured symbol of death in the time of Covid-19. In this episode, Zeinab Badawi travels to South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Zambia to find out about the powerful kingdoms of southern Africa and their rulers from 10th to 19th century, like the Mutapa kingdom that stretched across portions of eight modern-day southern African countries. We hear about one military ruler who repeatedly saw off Portuguese invaders, and we admire the incredible ruins of Great Zimbabwe, the largest stone settlement in Africa south of the Sahara. Foreign visitors could not believe that this towering civilisation dating from the 1100s was built by Africans. In this episode Zeinab Badawi starts with a visit to some of the most sensational historic sites in Africa: the Swahili coastal settlements of Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique on Africa’s Indian Ocean coast. In this episode Zeinab Badawi visits rarely seen historic sites and magnificent ruins in Mali and Mauritania in west Africa. We hear from Africans about how trans-Saharan trade, mainly in gold, meant that by about the 7th century rich kingdoms became established in West Africa. These eventually gave rise to three of the greatest empires on the continent, including the Mali Empire which began in the 13th century. Under armed guard, Zeinab visits the fabled city of Timbuktu, which was overrun by extremists in 2012. Mali’s ruler Mansa Musa was reputedly the wealthiest individual to have ever lived. She brings a rich narrative of a period in Africa’s history when it was a significant player in the world economy, and influenced global thinking through great centres of learning.
