Exactly a year ago today, Malawi's then president Bingu wa Mutharika collapsed suddenly in his office. He died minutes later on his way to hospital. His death came when his popularity was at its lowest ebb. The economy was in bad shape and things were also falling apart on the political front. The current President Joyce Banda's first challenges was trying to fix the country's ailing finances. She allowed a 49 % currency devaluation on the advice of the International Monetary Fund. The price of goods and services shot up. Komla Dumor sat down with her on a recent visit to the UK, and began by asking just how much influence external players like the IMF may have over Malawi's economy.

The oil market has been roiled by the Iran war, with prices swinging wildly as conflict around the Strait of Hormuz disrupts supply and spooks traders. For regions most dependent on Gulf exports, the strain is already apparent, with wider implications on the horizon. The war in Iran has triggered an unprecedented disruption in global oil markets by effectively halting traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway that carries roughly a quarter of the world’s seaborne crude. While the conflict has produced a severe humanitarian toll, its economic shockwaves have centered on energy: Brent crude has surged beyond $100 a barrel amid extreme volatility. The situation is considered unique in the history of Middle East conflicts since Iran has never before sought to fully close the Strait to traffic. Around 6.7 million barrels per day of oil production has been blocked, and the International Energy Agency recently announced a record 400 million-barrel coordinated release from global reserves to stabilize markets. Well while Chinese money is welcome. It looks like - in certain circumstances - some workers are not. At least 125 Chinese nationals involved in small-scale gold mining in Ghana are being held in custody by the country's immigration authorities. They were arrested for a breach of Ghanaian law, prohibiting foreigners from small-scale mining. The BBC's Akwasi Sarpong reports.

And there've been questions over the witnesses in the cases relating to Kenya's post-election violence in early 2008.
