New York's Epidemic Emergency
In late August 1999, an infectious disease specialist in Queens, New York, reported two cases to public health officials. These were elderly patients with neurological disorders. New cases were reported in the following days, and many patients died. Tests confirmed that New York was in the grip of an epidemic transmitted by mosquitoes: St. Louis encephalitis. This was the first time that cases had been found in the city. Nearly a month later, exotic birds died at the Bronx Zoo. Zoo specialists analyzed the birds and discovered that they had the West Nile virus. This virus had never been seen in America before. With this information in hand, epidemiologists studying cases of St. Louis encephalitis were forced to come to a troubling conclusion: this virus is also transmitted to humans.
