Nikolay Zimyatov Wins 3 Cross-Country Skiing Golds - Lake Placid 1980 Winter Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Classic Olympic highlights as the Soviet Union's Nikolay Zimyatov wins his third cross-country skiing gold medal at the Lake Placid 1980 Winter Olympic Games. The Lake Placid Games were the Olympic debut of Soviet cross-country skier Nikolay Zimyatov. Aged 24, he had won a silver medal at the World Championships in 1978, but wasn't a clear favourite for a medal two years later. Still, Zimyatov managed to overcome the competition and win all three cross-country events. He began by taking gold in the 30 kilometre race, which he would defend four years later in Sarajevo. Two days later, he ended in fourth place in the 15 kilometre race and bounced back by taking gold in the 50km race. Zimyatov won his third medal as he anchored the Soviet team in the 4x10km relay. With that result Nikolay Zimyatov repeated the feat of fellow soviet Galina Kulakova winning three cross-country skiing gold medals in the same Olympic Winter Games (http://youtu.be/OZjFXNtcDh0), and become the first man to do so. Harold Osborn Wins High Jump Gold With Limited Vision - Paris 1924 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Even suffering with limited visual perception Harold Osborn was able to win the gold medal in the high jump event at the Paris 1924 Olympic Games. When Harold Osborn sustained a severe eye injury as a teenager, it put a huge dent into his potential athletic career as he became unable to judge distances easily. It was a condition which made his later success in the decathlon, where skill, precision, endurance and raw speed are put to their most severe test, all the more surprising. And for an athlete who finds it difficult to assess and perceive objects, it's hard to imagine a more difficult event to succeed in than the high jump. Raised on an Illinois farm in an athletics-keen family, Osborn had always been encouraged to jump, run, leap further and faster than all of his school friends. He enjoyed a massively successful collegiate career and went to Paris as the favourite in the high jump but as something of an unknown quantity in the decathlon. The high jump turned into a one-man show. He cleared every height using an accurately measured run-up which helped him assess the precise moment he should execute his leap. In a whirl of arms and legs he set an Olympic record of 6ft 6ins which would remain unbeaten until Berlin 12 years later. Shota Khabareli Surges To Olympic Judo Gold - Moscow 1980 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Classic Olympic highlights as Russia's Shota Khabareli wins the gold medal in the men's judo event at the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games. Russia and East Germany hoovered up the majority of the medals at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, but judo was a sport where the spoils were expected to be shared more evenly. [More] The event was held at the splendidly atmospheric Sports Palace in Luzhniki, where the tight confines and vociferous crowd made for a superb fighting arena. Unfortunately, the men's half middleweight event was deprived of its biggest name because of the boycott. Japan's Shozo Fujii had won the world title in Paris in spectacular fashion the previous year, and would have been the favourite had he been allowed to compete in Moscow. That honour duly fell to the Frenchman Bernard Tchoullyan, the man he'd beaten in the world championship final. Tchoullyan eased through the early rounds, but defeat in the semi-final left the path open for Georgian-born Russian Shota Khabareli. The 21-year-old had never won a major judo medal, but the experts sat up and took notice when he disposed of world championship bronze medallist Harald Heinke in the last 16. He took out Bulgarian Georgi Petrov in the quarter-final, and when he surged past Romanian Mircea Fratica in the semi-finals, he suddenly found himself in a battle for the gold. There he would face Cuban judoka Juan Ferrer La Hera, and the two enjoyed a classic game of cat and mouse. The Georgian edged it and held his alarms aloft when the final buzzer rang out. He fell into the arms of La Hera, who graciously accepted defeat. It was to prove the highlight of Khabareli's career, although he took a world bronze in 1983 and went on to enjoy a successful coaching career. Amy Williams Wins Skeleton Gold for Great Britain - Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Having led from start to finish, Amy Williams secured Great Britain's first individual gold for 30 years - and their first women's title since 1952 at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games. It may have taken 58 years, but for Amy Williams and the rest of Great Britain, it was well worth the wait. No British woman had previously won an individual gold medal at the Olympic Winter Games since 1952, when Jeannette Altwegg triumphed in women's figure skating. That record finally came to an end at the Whistler Sliding Centre, as Williams secured gold in the women's skeleton. "I'm not very good at numbers or stats so I didn't really realise that I won the first gold medal in a while," said Williams afterwards. "I can't believe it's really happening." Having led from the first round - when she set a track record of 53.83 secs - the 27-year-old had the weight of history on her shoulders as she began her fourth and final run, but the former 400m runner kept her composure to slide to gold ahead of Germans Kerstin Szymkowiak and Anja Huber, who claimed silver and bronze respectively. Cathy Ferguson's Sets Backstroke World Record For Gold At 16 - Tokyo 1964 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Relive the incredible moment America's Cathy Ferguson won the 100m backstroke gold medal, setting a world record time at the age of just 16 at the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games. The final of the women's 100m backstroke was a glittering line-up. It matched six past and present world record holders at various backstroke distances, an array of talent that has rarely been matched. Kiki Caron, of France, was just 16 years old, but had set a world best only a few months before. She might have considered herself the favourite at the time, only for her record to be beaten by the American Ginny Duenkel a couple of weeks before the Games. Satoko Tanaka of Japan was another contender, along with Britain's Jill Norfolk and Linda Ludgrove -- both of whom had also broken a world record. In the end, Caron and Duenkel both made the podium and left with medals -- but neither won. That honour went to the sixth in our list of world record-holders - America's Cathy Ferguson. Ferguson was another youthful prodigy. She was only 16 years old during the Tokyo Games, and had broken the 200m record a month beforehand. Here, by a margin of just 0.2secs, she edged victory to secure her second world record, and her first gold medal. Another gold came in the 4x100m medley relay, where she swam the opening backstroke leg to put the USA into a lead they never lost. The time, once again, was a world record. It was to prove Ferguson's only Olympic Games. She retired with a remarkable record of having entered two events, and coming away with two golds and two world records in the process. She later coached other swimmers while her daughter Allison won a national title in diving. China's Stock Market Likely to Outperform This Year Despite Tariffs: Eurasia Group
