Norway Win 6 Metre Sailing Gold- Paris 1924 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Classic Olympic highlights from the Paris 1924 Olympic Games as the Norwegian team win the 6 metre sailing gold medal. The regatta at the Olympics Games in Paris in 1924 were held at Le Havre. Four years after 14 classes competed at the Antwerp Games, only three classes were in competition on the choppy waters of the English Channel. Wildly varying weather conditions off the Normandy coast also made life difficult with blustery days alternating with dead calm making it tough for the crews to find any kind of rhythm. The competition was organised into elimination rounds and semi-finals and it was clear from the outset of the 6-metre class that the Norwegian crew were going to take some beating. Despite the choppy, unappealing competition waters the boats still managed to cut an elegant swathe through the water, their graceful sails and wooden hulls making for compelling viewing. In the opening race the Norwegians finished behind their Danish and Dutch rivals, and this trio of crews were to dominate the competition. Skippered by Anders Lundgren, the Norwegian boat Elizabeth V would not be beaten again, winning the second and third elimination races to ensure their place in the three-boat final. They continued their domination in the semi-finals, winning all three races to complete an imperious performance in at times quite awful conditions. Lundgren's team-mates were Christopher Dahl and Eugen Lund, who was the first of four generations of the Lund family to compete at the Olympic sailing regatta. Friends Rafer Johnson & Chuan-Kwang Yang Take Gold & Silver - Rome 1960 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Highlights from the Rome 1960 Olympics where decathlon competitors, training partners and friends Rafer Johnson and Chuan-Kwang Yang won the gold and silver medals respectively. The decathlon competition at the Rome 1960 Olympic Games wasn't just a fantastic display of athletics skills. It was also an example of Friendship as an Olympic Value. American Rafer Johnson and Chuan-Kwang Yang, representing Chinese Taipei, trained together in California and were good friends on and off the track. Yet, at the Rome Games they were competing against each other. Yang began the competition with by winning both the 100m and long-jump competition, putting him in the initial lead. Johnson took that lead away with a 15.82m shot put. Yang still tried to catch up in the following events, but after Johnson's discus throw, the decision was left to the 1500m. To become Olympic champion Yang would have to beat the American by a 10 second margin. If not, Rafer Johnson would take gold. In an race where Rafer Johnson ran his personal best for the distance, Chuan-Kwang Yang was able to win the 1500 metres, but without the necessary distance from second place runner Johnson. The two friends were now Olympic medallists, Rafer Johnson from the United States taking gold and Chuan-Kwang Yang from Chinese Taipei with silver. Prozumenshchikova Wins 200m Breastroke Gold At 15 - Tokyo 1964 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe The Soviet Union's first gold medal in swimming came from a youthful source - Galina Prozumenshchikova was just 15 years old. Her victory in the 200m breaststroke made her a national star. In fact, she was the first swimmer to become a celebrity in her country. She had won the national championship the year before, but was still something of an unknown quantity on the world stage. Her first round race, though, suggested a special talent. She didn't even win, but the fact that she was just a sliver behind Germany's Bärbel Grimmer - who broke the Olympic record - showed that Prozumenshchikova had no problem keeping up with the best. For the first half of the final, she allowed the pace to be set by another Soviet swimmer, Svetlana Babanina, who had beaten Grimmer's Olympic record time in the heats. This time, though, Prozumenshchikova was to move ahead at half distance and take the lead. Babanina slipped back to third, with the greatest challenge coming from the American swimmer Claudia Kolb who was, at 14 years old, even younger than Prozumenshchikova. But victory was never really in doubt, and it came with a winning margin of more than a second, and with the Olympic record falling once again. It was to be the only gold medal of Prozumenshchikova's career but she went on to take silver and bronze medals in each of the next two Games in the 100m and 200m breaststroke. Mary Lou Retton Comes Back From Injury To Win Gold - Los Angeles 1984 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Mary Lou Retton - USA - Artistic Gymnastics - Individual All-around - Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games Prior to the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, no American man or woman had won the all-around artistic gymnastics gold medal. And seldom has an Olympic competitor been roared on by a home crowd quite like Mary Lou Retton in Los Angeles. Every move, pirouette and spin was egged on by the vociferous home support, and she was to need every decibel to help her eclipse the supreme Romanian Ecaterina Szabo. Szabo was world class, and would leave Los Angeles with four gold medals, but alas none of them was the blue riband all-around event because of the irresistible Retton. A few months earlier and a freak injury threatened the participation of the girl from Fairmont, West Virginia. After qualifying from the Olympic trials, she sat down to sign autographs for her fans when her knee locked. The puzzling injury required surgery which needed a three-month recovery, leaving her perilously short of preparation ahead of the first, and biggest, international competition of her career. However, she recovered and Retton and Szabo put on a stunning show of athleticism and grace for the watching millions. With two rotations remaining, Szabo held a 0.15pt lead over the American, but Retton nailed a perfect 10 in the floor exercises and needed to repeat the feat in the vault to pip Szabo to gold. You could hear a pin drop as Retton stood at the end of the runway, knowing that only perfection would grab the United States their first ever gold in the event. She absolutely floored her landing and sent the watching crowd into raptures as the judges conferred over their award. When the perfect 10 flashed up there was pandemonium in the arena. She never repeated the dizzy heights of that night in Los Angeles but she had emulated her heroine and inspiration Nadia Comaneci in the most dramatic style possible. Trump 104% China Tariffs Kick In, 'Fire Sale' on US Treasuries | The Opening Trade 04/09
President Donald Trump is pushing ahead with tariffs on roughly 60 trading partners that he dubbed the “worst offenders” that took effect after midnight New York time. Most critically, the president plans to forge ahead with what would amount to a 104% levy on many Chinese goods. A selloff in longer-dated US Treasuries accelerated, worsening the slump in bond equivalents across the globe, as an escalation in the trade war sowed doubts over the haven status of US government debt. Every sector in Europe was down at the market open, but drugmakers are the biggest decliners so far after Trump’s comments that the US would be “announcing very shortly a major tariff on pharmaceuticals”. The Stoxx 600 Health Care Index has dropped to the lowest since October 2022. Weight-loss and diabetes drugmaker Novo Nordisk slumped along with AstraZeneca, GSK stocks also falling. Percy Williams Wins 100m & 200m Gold At 19 - Amsterdam 1928 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Classic Olympic highlights as Canada's 19 year old Percy Williams claims the gold medal in the 100m and 200m events at the Amsterdam 1928 Olympic Games. Percy Williams was the very antithesis of the modern day sprinter. While now the muscular, powerful, bulky speedsters prevail, Williams was slight and pale and looked anything but an Olympic champion in the waiting. When Williams turned up at the Canadian trials in early 1928, not only was he not yet 20 but he had run only a handful of 100m races in his career. However he booked his place on the boat to the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in emphatic style with victories in the 100m and 200m events. Williams opened in Holland with a standard 11.0 sec win in the opening round of heats but the world and the rest of the field sat up and top took notice of the waif-like Canadian when he equalled the Olympic record of legend Harold Abrahams of 10.6secs in the second heats. In an incredibly tight set of semis, four men equalled Williams's mark and commentators felt the favoured runners from the United States and Great Britain would come through in the final. When the six sprinters settled down at the start line on the uneven, cinder track, there was an expectant hush among the crowd. In his upright starting position, back straight, eyes focused forward, Williams exploded off the line and by 30 metres the race was already in his grasp. As he crossed the line he flung his arms into the air in celebration and won by half a yard in 10.8secs from Britain's Jack London. A matter of days later he added the 200m title and news of his victories was greeted with jubilation in his native Vancouver. President Trump's so-called reciprocal tariffs kicked in after countries failed to secure a last-minute reprieve. He imposed levies on China as high as 104% along with import taxes on roughly 60 trading partners. China held off on immediate retaliation to the new tariffs after hitting back within minutes in February and March. The yield on 30-year Treasuries surged to the highest since November 2023 amid growing doubts about the haven status of US sovereign bonds. Europe's stock benchmark fell more than 3%. Weightlifting Failure & Success - Moscow 1980 Olympics
📺 Re-live ALL the incredible #Paris2024 action ➡️ https://go.olympics.com/watch A look back at some of the success and failure stories from the weightlifting events at the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games. Much of the focus leading up to the weightlifting tournament at the 1980 Olympic Games was on an injury to Russian legend Vassily Alekseyev. The scene was set for the 353-pound giant from Ryazan to make it an unprecedented hat-trick of gold medals in the super heavyweight category after record-breaking triumphs in Munich and Montreal. However an injury originally picked up just before the 1978 world championships in Pennsylvania restricted his chances and he was eliminated in the early stages. Russian lifters dominated, however, with five of the 10 gold medals on offer taken by the home contingent. Kanybek Osmanaliyev and Viktor Mazin took the honours in the now defunct flyweight and featherweight divisions, the former winning by the slenderest of margins on lower bodyweight. Yet it was two Bulgarians who set the competition alight at the Izmailovo Sports Palace. First Yanko Rusev took the lightweight gold with a new Olympic and world record, his overall total of 342.5kgs including a world record jerk of 195kgs putting him streets ahead of the field. Team-mate Assen Zlatev then followed suit in the middleweight category to take gold with 360kgs and then achieved a jerk world record of 205.5kgs after the competition had been completed. Home fans had something to cheer about once more when Yurik Vardanian crushed the opposition in the light heavyweight field, winning by an unprecedented 27.5kgs with a winning total of 400kgs, a score which would have won him gold in the first and middle heavyweight classes. Belarus-born Leonid Taranenko took the heavyweight gold for Russia, and 12 years later was to gain a silver for the unified team at the Barcelona Games at super-heavyweight level. With Alekseyev bowing out in the early stages, Sultan Rakhmanov proved a worthy successor by jerking an eye-watering 245kgs to lift gold by a healthy margin in the super heavyweight.
