Jim Hines Breaks The 10 Second Barrier For 100m Gold - Mexico 1968 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Relive the historic moment the USA's Jim Hines broke the 10 second barrier in the men's 100m event at the Mexico 1968 Olympic Games. When he watched Bob Hayes' stellar performance at the Tokyo 1964 Games, Jim Hines got inspired to repeat his idol's feat four years later, at the Mexico Games. And the 1968 Olympics were a great stage to do so. For the first time in Olympic history, an electronic chronometer was used alongside the traditional manual timekeepers. As Hines left the blocks in the men's 100 metres final, he started behind some of his fellow competitors who were known as better starters. Between the 50 to 60 metres mark of the race, he took the lead not to let go of it until the finish line. The American had just set a new Olympic record, waiting only for the official confirmation. Though originally clocked manually at 9.9s, it was later confirmed through the new electronic system as 9.95s. Jim Hines was now not only the "fastest man on earth" but also the first one to break the 10 seconds barrier at the Olympic Games. Olympic Long Jump Highlights - Tokyo 1964 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Classic highlights from the women's long jump event taking place at the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games featuring Mary Rand and Ann Packer. Athletes often share a room during the Olympic Games, but rarely can a room have contained quite so much sporting brilliance as the one shared by Ann Packer and Mary Rand, two unassuming British women destined to prove themselves among the most versatile athletes in the world. Packer had been a champion in the long jump, hurdles and sprinting earlier in her life. In Tokyo, she had won silver in the 400m and gold in the 800m. And yet, remarkably, her room-mate's haul was ever greater. Mary Rand was another athlete of extreme versatility. She had competed in the 80m hurdles in Rome, and she was an international class sprinter. She held the unofficial triple jump world record (the event was not officially recognised until many years after her retirement) and was a fine high jumper. But long jump was her main focus and she came to these Games inspired by the memory of a huge disappointment at the previous edition. In Rome, four years before, she had led the long jump after the qualifying round but then had a terrible time in the final, with two no-jumps and a meek effort in the third round that was only good enough for ninth place. In Tokyo, though, she was a woman transformed. Once again, she shone in the qualifying round, breaking the Olympic long jump record, but this time her form continued into the final. With her fifth jump out of six, she broke the world record to confirm her victory and become the first British woman to win a gold medal in Olympic athletics. Rand was not finished there, though. Two days later she was taking part in the inaugural women's pentathlon, perhaps the most gruelling event for women athletes of the time. Rand stood third after the first day, despite a poor shot put, and, thanks to predictably strong performances in the long jump and high jump, moved up to second. Despite winning three of the five elements, she could not get ahead of the imperious Irina Press, but did win a silver to add to her collection. Finally Rand completed her set with a bronze medal in the 4x100m relay. "She was the most gifted athlete I ever saw," said Packer of her room-mate. "There has never been anyone like her since, and I don't believe there ever will." Injury prevented her from making the team for the 1968 Olympic Games and Rand retired that year, still only 28 years old. European Stocks Jump Most in Five Years on Trump Tariff Pause | The Opening Trade 04/10
European stocks rallied after US President Donald Trump paused plans to implement higher reciprocal tariffs on dozens of trade partners, easing concerns about a global trade war -- though he still plans to move forward with 125% tariffs on China. Trump’s announcement sent US stocks up by the most since 2008 on Wednesday, though the S&P 500 remains down more than 7% so far this year. The Stoxx Europe 600 Index was higher with all sectors in the green and banks and miners leading gains. France’s CAC 40 jumped and Germany’s DAX soared. While the Trump's automotive tariffs didn’t begin until after the first quarter ended, Volkswagen’s results offer an early look at the wide-ranging impacts of US President Donald Trump’s levies on the car industry. The carmaker's profit tumbled almost 40% in the first quarter. The Opening Trade has everything you need to know as markets open across Europe. Emil Zátopek Wins 10,000m In Incredible Time For Gold - Helsinki 1952 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Amazing highlights as Emil Zátopek wins the 10,000m event, beating his previous Olympic winning time by 40 seconds at the Helsinki 1952 Olympics. This would be one of 3 golds for Emil Zátopek as he would go on to complete an un-matched treble with the 5,000m and marathon Olympic titles. Emil Zátopek is one of the most iconic athletes in Olympic history. At the London 1948 Games, he had already won two medals (gold and silver) in the 10,000m and 5,000m, respectively. And was therefore one of the top favourites to win a medal at the Helsinki 1952 Olympics. Already at the first race, the 10,000m, he lead right from the start. And as Zatopek raised the pace, it was only French runner Alain Mimoun who was able to keep up with the Czechoslovakian. However, as the race came towards the end, Emil Zatopek took it even further and left Mimoun almost half a lap behind. Zátopek won Olympic gold by finishing in 29:17.0, which became the new Olympic record beating his own time from the London 1948 Games (29:59.6) by over 40 seconds. This fantastic race was only the beginning of Zátopek's amazing feats at the Helsinki Games which culminated with winning the Olympic marathon and therefore becoming the only athlete in Olympic history to win the 5,000m, 10,000m and the marathon in the same edition of the Games. 📺 Re-live ALL the incredible #Paris2024 action ➡️ https://go.olympics.com/watch 📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Watch highlights of one of the most incredible stories in Olympic history as the USA's Billy Mills wins the 10,000m gold as a complete unknown underdog at the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games. The story of the 10,000m at the Tokyo 1964 Games is the story of one of the greatest upsets ever seen at the Olympics. The race had been predicted to be a three-way battle between Murray Halbert, the defending 5000m champion, the defending 10,000m champion Pyotr Bolotnikov, and the world record holder Ron Clarke. It did not go according to plan. By the halfway mark, though, only Clarke was anywhere near the front, accompanied by Tunisian Mohamed Gammoudi and the American Billy Mills. Mills was so unheralded that, in the run-up to the Games, not one reporter had asked him a single question. They should have done, for his story was memorable. He had been born in South Dakota as a member of a Native American family, and was raised on a reservation reserved for the Oglala Sioux people. He had 11 brothers and sisters, but was orphaned at the age of 12, and so was raised by his grandmother. He took up boxing and used to run as a way of staying fit, but discovered he was a better runner than boxer, and so won a place at the University of Kansas on an athletic scholarship. He excelled at cross-country while at university but, by the time of the Olympic Games, he had left Kansas to join the US Marine Corps. It was while serving in the armed forces that he qualified for the Games. His qualifying time was not notable, but he had spent years planning for the final and had belief that, on the day, he would match the standard of those around him. The race was more about endurance, tactics and even fortune than out-and-out pace. The last lap was a confusing affair, with slower runners being lapped as Clarke, Gammoudi and Mills charged along, elbowing and shoving each other as they jockeyed for position. Clarke led, then Gammoudi and then, to the astonishment of both the frontrunners, Mills sprinted past to win by almost three metres, beating his own personal best time by 47 seconds. "I'm flabbergasted," said Mills in victory. Famously, a Japanese reporter asked simply "who are you?" Victory changed his life. He was acclaimed by his tribe as a warrior and given the name Makoce Teh'la, which translates as "loves his country". He has devoted much of his life to working with Native American communities and remains the first and, so far, only American to win Olympic 10,000m gold. The sprinting records that still stand - Florence Griffith Joyner - Seoul 1988 Olympic Games
📺 Re-live ALL the incredible #Paris2024 action ➡️ https://go.olympics.com/watch Florence Griffith Joyner - USA - Athletics - 100m & 200m - Seoul 1988 Olympic Games Florence Griffith Joyner's career was as brief as it was colourful. The Californian sprinter was known more for her outrageous outfits and long, painted fingernails as much as she was recognised for her sprinting achievements. But all that stopped in 1988, when the Flo-Jo phenomenon took root amid a string of incredible performances culminating in double sprint gold at the Olympic Games in Seoul. She was undoubtedly a sprinter of note, claiming silver in the 200m at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles and again earning the runners-up spot in the world championships in Rome three years later. But it was in the relatively humble surrounds of the US Olympic trials in 1988 that she made her astonishing breakthrough. In the heats of the 100m she broke the world record held by compatriot Evelyn Ashford, knocking almost three tenths off the previous mark with an unheard of time of 10.49secs. Controversy raged over the new time as the wind reading for the race was 0.0 while the triple jump equipment registered a wind speed of 4.3 miles per second a few yards away. Yet the record stood and only Flo-Jo herself has come within touching distance of the time ever since. Her performances in Seoul were nothing short of remarkable. She dominated a world class field in the 100m final, beating Ashford and Heike Drechsler with blistering pace. She clocked 10.54secs in the final after establishing a two-yard lead at the halfway stage and scorching away from the field in the second half of the race. The 200m win was even more impressive, shattering the world record in the final with a time of 21.34secs to leave Jamaica's Grace Jackson, who beat her own personal best by a large, trailing about five metres behind in silver medal position. Griffith Joyner's records for 100m and 200m have yet to be broken. At the Games in Seoul, she ran in both relays, winning a third gold medal in the 4x100m and a silver in the 4x400m. In 1998, Griffith Joyner died in her sleep at the age of 38, the victim of a form of epileptic seizure that led her to suffocate. Castro & Cortes Win Equestrian Jumping Gold At Wembley- London 1948 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Highlights from the London 1948 Olympic Games as Mexico's Humberto Mariles Cortes and Ruben Uriza Castro win the gold medal in the equestrian jumping event. The Equestrian jumping competition at the London 1948 Olympic Games took place at what would now be considered a very unusual stadium, Wembley Stadium. The Prix des Nations - as it was called at the time - was rightly celebrated as the world's greatest show-jumping test for both man and horse. Over forty riders from fifteen nations competed on the thousand metre course with sixteen obstacles each with its own peculiar difficulties. After a fierce competition which included many refusals, falls but also fantastic performances, it was the Mexicans who dominated the events. In the Individual competition it was fellow countrymen Humberto Mariles Cortes (riding Arete) and Ruben Uriza Castro (his horse Hatvey) who took the top two positions on the podium for Mexico. Jean Francois d'Orgeix (with Sucre de Pomme) won bronze in third place. Mexico also won the team competition, staying ahead of the Spanish team in second place, and the British hosts who completed the podium taking the bronze medal. 📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe An amazing collection of footage from the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games gymnastics competition as legend Larissa Latynina competed against up and coming star Vera Caslavska. While Tokyo 1964 saw the final performances of the Soviet gymnastics legend Larissa Latynina at the Olympic Games, it also marked the rise of new upcoming star, Czechoslovakia's Vera Caslavska, who would also gain iconic status in her career. Latynina dominated women's gymnastics in her time, collecting 18 Olympic medals between 1956 and 1964. She was the only athlete in any sport to have won eighteen Olympic medals for almost 50 years, until no one less than Michael Phelps broke her record at the London 2012 Games. Though Caslavska had her Olympic debut at the Rome 1960 Games, it was only four years later in Tokyo that she made her mark as a prominent gymnast. During her career, she won a total 11 Olympic medals, including three gold medals at those Tokyo Games.
