Mariam Sankara, the widow of former Burkina Faso President Thomas Sankara, says “justice is needed” as the trial for his murder starts. Sankara was assassinated in 1987, having taken power in 1983. He has been called "Africa's Che Guevara" for his socialist and revolutionary beliefs and policies. His widow says he knew he was in danger from those who disagreed with the direction in which he was taking Burkina Faso. The biggest protests in a generation swept through Nigeria in 2020. Thousands of young people protested against police brutality. But on 20 October, the Nigerian army opened fire on protesters at the Lekki toll gate in Lagos. Despite it being filmed by people there and even live streamed on Instagram, the army denies the shooting happened and says it was 'fake news'. The government called it 'a massacre without blood or bodies'. The BBC's Yemisi Adegoke investigates what happened that night. Burying the dead in eastern Nigeria has always been a contentious issue. Unlike the majority Islamic north, in the predominantly Christian region in the east, families often have a difficult time burying their dead, as the process tends to be very expensive and the pressure of cultural norms means that a lot is expected from people who are grieving. Now there is a public outcry against a culture where religious and cultural institutions tax families before allowing them to bury their dead. A group of street dancers in Nairobi struggle against the odds to become celebrities. A seven-strong group of homeless street dancers in Nairobi, who call themselves the Street Family Dance Crew are determined to overcome the desperate hardships of street life and make their names as celebrity dancers. Film-maker Nick Wambugu follows them for two years on their quest to find fame and fortune. Their journey is fraught with obstacles as they endure hunger and destitution, bust-ups with police, family troubles, and the crisis of the Covid-19 pandemic. Fertile lands are turning into deserts in the north, while flash floods have become more common in the south. The country's oil industry is making things worse as the practice of flaring - the burning of natural gas that is released when oil is extracted from the ground - is common despite its illegality. In an interview with the BBC to mark 100 days since she took office, Kenya’s Chief Justice Martha Koome says trust in the judiciary has over time been affected, and now she is focusing on presenting to Kenyans a judiciary that they can have confidence in. Chief Justice Koome, the first woman to hold this position in Kenya, said that it concerns her that cases on corruption in the country and scandals that involve millions of dollars of taxpayers' money being embezzled, are taking years to be resolved. She also talked of the judiciary’s preparedness for the presidential elections next year, telling Kenyans that the courts are ready and willing to mediate in a non-partisan way in case any matters arise. In an interview with BBC Africa, Zambia's new President, Hakainde Hichilema, said his government is discovering "horrifying" amounts of money being stolen. He added that his government would show "zero tolerance" towards corruption, and would get to the bottom of what he called the illicit movement of funds very soon. President Hichilema also revealed that he planned to change the country’s constitution to allow more women into politics. Hakainde Hichelema, who was sworn in a week ago, outlined his plans for devolution to communities, to ensure funds are decentralised to allow them to set their own priorities. Naledi was forced to throw her baby from a burning building in Durban, South Africa. It happened as riots and lootings erupted across South Africa, following the jailing of former President Jacob Zuma. She told the BBC's Nomsa Maseko what happened.

South Africa is deploying the military to tackle riots that have broken out since the jailing of former president Jacob Zuma. Shops were looted and buildings set on fire on Monday as Zuma challenged his sentence at a hearing in the top court. At least six people have been killed and 200 arrested since the unrest began last week. Zuma was convicted of contempt of court after failing to attend an inquiry into corruption during his presidency.
