Sierra Leone was one of the hardest-hit countries when the Ebola epidemic struck West Africa in 2014. Now it is battling the coronavirus. The first case was confirmed on the 31 of March and since then the numbers have been climbing steadily. Tyson Conteh is a filmmaker in Makeni, a city in northern Sierra Leone. He covered the Ebola outbreak for #BBCAfricaEye in the documentary Standing Among The Living and now he is making a series of video diaries for BBC Africa Eye showing how his city is dealing with the coronavirus. In the fifth episode, we look at how Sierra Leone is again using contact tracers to fight the virus. They were essential to overcoming the Ebola epidemic which hit the country in 2014. For months, hydroxychloroquine, has been at the centre of much interest as potential preventative measure and for treating patients with Covid-19. The anti-malarial drug has been promoted by Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro and by his US counterpart Donald Trump who even claims to have taken it himself for a while to ward off infection. The ongoing interest in the drug has led to shortages and rising prices which directly impacted those taking the drug already for autoimmune conditions like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. While recent large scale trials have shown that hydroxychloroquine is not effective as a treatment, some countries have continued to promote its use within their healthcare systems. An underworld of quack doctors and conmen have been exploiting the coronavirus pandemic and making money selling fake coronavirus cures. Investigative reporter Anas Aremeyaw Anas goes undercover in Ghana, exposing a Covid-19 scam said to be worth tens of thousands of dollars. The World Health Organisation estimates 100,000 people die as a consequence of fake clinical and herbal medicines every year in Africa. With the start in June of the first human vaccine trials in South Africa, Africa has now officially joined the race to find a Covid-19 vaccine. The large-scale trial of the vaccine developed by Oxford University is being conducted in South Africa, the UK and Brazil. Experts say a vaccine is the one thing that will help bring life back to normal, but trials have to take place in many different settings before there is one which is safe to use. Scientists say that it is vital that Africans take part in these trials, arguing it could jeopardise efforts to find a vaccine that works worldwide - and not just for richer nations. But critics cite a history of Western exploitation of Africa and unethical drug trials in the past as a reason not to participate. Stocks and bonds rose while oil fell as traders weighing the viability of US-Iran ceasefire talks sent markets to a series of big swings. The S&P 500 added about 1% as efforts by the US to end the war gathered pace, eclipsing news that Iran rejected a US ceasefire proposal and maintained attacks on Israel and Gulf Arab states. Brent dropped to around $100. Treasuries pared this month’s losses. President Donald Trump has been pushing for talks with Iran in a bid to halt the fighting, with the US compiling a 15-point peace proposal, according to people familiar with the matter. Yet those efforts have been clouded by uncertainty over the structure of negotiations and how any deal would be arranged.  Meanwhile, Tehran keeps signaling little willingness to compromise. A move by the US to start indirect talks is illogical and not viable at this stage of the conflict, Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency reported on Wednesday, citing informed sources it didn’t identify. “Markets are positioning for a conflict resolution, despite lingering strategic ambiguity,” said Elias Haddad at Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. “Ultimately, Iran’s response to the US de-escalation pivot will decide whether peak fear is behind us or still ahead.” -------- More on Bloomberg Television and Markets Like this video? A Los Angeles jury found that Google and Meta are liable and must pay damages to a woman who alleged that social media platforms from the tech companies were addicting and caused her to have a mental health crisis.
