It's been five months since Sudan’s military staged a coup ending a power-sharing agreement with civilian leaders. Every week since then, pro-democracy demonstrators have taken to the streets to challenge the junta’s authority. More than 80 people have been killed as security forces crackdown on protests. Many of those taking to the streets are young women. But there are increasing reports security forces have been targeting them with beatings, sexual assault, and rape to silence them. Between 2020 and 2021 Kenyan road deaths rose more than 20 per cent. Last year, more than 4,500 were killed and over 16,000 injured. The Kenyan Government says drunk driving, overloading, and speeding are among the top causes of the carnage. But is corruption also a factor? Journalist Richard Chacha, himself paralysed in a road accident ten years ago, joins Africa Eye to expose rogue driving school employees who, for a fee, fix it for rookie drivers to get behind the wheel without ever having to take a driving test. A disturbing video has been shared online of a woman being sexually assaulted by boda-boda motorbike operators in Nairobi. The incident reignited a longstanding debate in Kenya about the treatment and protection of women. Many activists took to the streets to protest and President Uhuru Kenyatta has ordered the authorities to re-register all motorbike taxi operators. A key suspect in the sexual assault has been arrested, police say. Hauwa Aliyu‘s 18-year-old son Suleiman left Nigeria for Ukraine in 2021 to study medicine in the city of Sumy. A year later he found himself stuck in a war-torn country. Gracia Kibangu became the first openly queer woman to not only participate in a Namibian beauty pageant, but to win. The 22-year-old model took part in the 2021 Miss Face of Namibia beauty competition and won the Miss Congeniality category, as well as being named the third runner up overall. Gracia said it felt important to speak her truth on a national platform as she wanted to be authentic about her advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community - especially following a number of high profile cases of discrimination against the community in Namibia in 2021. Members of the LGBTQ+ community in many African countries feel they have to hide their orientation to avoid hostility and discrimination. Private photos of women being shared, without their consent, on the social media app Telegram. The app has seen a massive increase in its number of users in the last year, and while it says it moderates public spaces and removes illegal pornography, a BBC investigation found hundreds of nude pictures shared in Telegram channels in more than 20 countries, including Kenya.
