In Canada, in 1999, doctors were alarmed by the death of a woman in her fifties who died of cryptococcal meningitis. In the following years, they treated dozens of other patients exhibiting pneumonia-like symptoms: shortness of breath, weight loss, and severe headaches. Following several studies and research, they understand that Vancouver Island is home to a very dangerous fungus. Veterinarians, in turn, reported dozens of cases in the animal population. The fungus does not affect a single species. Genetic analyses led to the conclusion that this new form of cryptococcus was identical to a common form found in Australia. Doctors find themselves with as many new questions as answers. In November 2020, more than 50 people were shot and killed during a government crackdown on the streets of Uganda’s capital, Kampala. Officials defended the use of live fire, saying the police were responding to rioters. Last year, a black man called George was killed by a police officer, not in Minneapolis but in Dublin. George Nkencho was shot outside his family’s home. He had assaulted someone and police say he was carrying a knife. His family believe he was in the midst of a mental health crisis. It was just the sixth fatal shooting by the Gardaí (Irish police) in 22 years. The killing has exposed tensions in Ireland as a new, diverse community comes of age.
