Japan's Ishiba Vows to Stay on, EU to Prepare US Trade Retaliation Plan | Bloomberg The Pulse 7/21
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said he intended to stay on even as his ruling coalition suffered a historic setback in an upper house election on Sunday, an outcome that may further unsettle markets. The ruling Liberal Democratic Party along with longtime partner Komeito lost its majority in the chamber, public broadcaster NHK reported, saying the bloc failed to win the 50 seats it needed to maintain control. That marks the first time since 1955 that a leader from the storied Japanese party will govern the country without a majority in at least one of the legislative bodies. In trade news, European Union envoys are set to meet as early as this week to formulate a plan for measures to respond to a possible no-deal scenario with US President Donald Trump, whose tariff negotiating position is seen to have stiffened ahead of an Aug. 1 deadline. The overwhelming preference is to keep negotiations with Washington on track in a bid for an outcome to the impasse ahead of next month’s deadline. Still, efforts have yet to yield sustained progress following talks in Washington last week, according to people familiar with the matter. Negotiations will continue over the next two weeks. Wine Woes as President Trump’s Tariffs Loom
A planned 30% US tariff on EU wines could hike prices, slash choice, and force layoffs across America’s wine trade. The US wine industry warns that distributors who rely on European bottles for most of their revenue would collapse, hurting domestic winemakers and vintners too. While some California grape growers hope the tariffs will level the playing field for US winemakers, importers and retailers are skeptical that protectionism is the long-term solution. Critics say tariffs won’t fix oversupply or falling demand and would instead shrink the entire US wine ecosystem. -------- More on Bloomberg Television and Markets Like this video? Summers Says One Big Beautiful Bill Cuts Safety Net
Former Treasury Secretary Lawrence H. Summers warns that President Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” may have serious long-term consequences by expanding deficits and cutting the social safety net. While inflation from President Trump's policies hasn’t hit yet, Summers cautions that tariffs and debt-driven spending could have delayed effects. He also rejects Trump’s call for 1% interest rates, saying they would spark dangerous borrowing and inflation expectations. Meanwhile, Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan notes consumers remain strong due to wage growth, but small businesses face pressure from trade uncertainty and high rates. -------- More on Bloomberg Television and Markets Like this video?
