かつて“鬼”と畏れられた男がいた―。国宝や重要文化財に指定された多くの寺社の修繕・復興に力を尽くした宮大工・西岡常一の生涯に迫る、渾身のドキュメンタリー！撮影が開始された1990年５月は、薬師寺回廊第一期工事が行われていた。それを棟梁として取り仕切っていたのが、“鬼”と称された匠・西岡常一である。「技術は体で覚えるもの、盗むもの」と言われる。とりわけ宮大工の奥義は、長い時間をかけた厳しい修練の後、ようやくひと握りの者だけが習得することができる。しかし西岡は、自らがそうして培ってきた経験と技術、研ぎ澄まされた感覚を後進の若者たちに言葉で伝えようとしていた。77年に胃癌を患った彼は、人生の最晩年を迎えつつあることをしっかりと見据えていたのかもしれない。「千年の木には千年のいのちがある」「木は鉄を凌駕する」…“鬼”の遺言とも言える言葉たちと所縁ある人々へのインタビューが、速さと量ばかりを競う模倣だけの技術とは根本的に異なる、いにしえからの日本人の叡智と自然への洞察、そして千年の未来へといのちを繋いでいくという途方もない時間への執念を浮かび上がらせていく。

父親の看病のため先住民マオリ系トゥホエ族が暮らすルアトキに帰郷し、警官業務の傍らスクールバスの運転手を務めるタフィ。人里離れたこの地には活動家タメ・イティが主宰のブートキャンプ“ラマ”が存在した。ウレウェラの森で訓練に励むその目的は、サバイバル技術の習得と部族のアイデンティティ存続。しかし、彼らは首相暗殺を企てるテロ集団として疑われ、ニュージーランド警察により密かに監視されていたのである。ある晩、問題を抱えた一人の青年ラスティが父親と口論の末、ライフルを発砲。その監視映像が引き金となり、捜査当局はギャラガー率いる特殊戦術部隊《STG》を突入させ強制捜査に乗り出す。監視の事実を知ったタフィは集落の盾となりギャラガーと対峙するが、ある出来事をきっかけに緊張感は一気に高まり、思わぬ誤解が予期せぬ悲劇を生むこととなる。
