The Wagner Group is an organisation of Russian mercenaries. Thousands of their soldiers have been fighting on the Russian side in the war in Ukraine. But they have also been active on the African continent in several countries - including the Central African Republic, Mali and now, allegedly, Burkina Faso. Robert Curley has just gotten married. He renovates his old house for himself and his wife, Joan. He also performs electrical repairs at a chemistry laboratory. A few weeks later, he becomes seriously ill. Doctors make a diagnosis and send him home with medication, but to no avail. Curley's symptoms worsen, and he is admitted to the hospital again. Doctors are unable to determine the cause of Curley's mysterious illness. They transfer him to a state-of-the-art clinic, but before a diagnosis can be made, Curley falls into a coma and is pronounced neurologically dead. A few days later, Joan asks for the ventilator to be disconnected. At the same time, the doctors discover that their patient had been poisoned with thallium. This is the story of a country where the path to womanhood can bring pain, trauma, and even death. A country where children can be left motherless because of the ancient traditions of Bondo - a Sierra Leone secret society which cuts out female genitals as part of centuries old rite of passage ceremonies. FGM – female genital mutilation – is woven so deeply into the female fabric of Sierra Leone, most women there have had their genitalia cut. No-one really knows how many have died as a result. BBC Africa Eye reporter, Tyson Conteh, believes his former girlfriend, Fatmata, bled to death after undergoing FGM in 2016. He investigates whether her death was then covered up to protect Bondo. It is a journey driven by Fatmata, who, says Tyson, spoke to him in his dreams demanding justice.
