How China AI DeepSeek Upended US Tech as Trump, Nvidia, OpenAI Respond | Bloomberg The Pulse
Nvidia jumped in premarket trading after plunging 17% yesterday following Monday’s record-breaking rout. US stock futures staged a small rebound after the tech-fueled selloff, as Chinese AI startup DeepSeek released an AI model called R1 that has gained significant attention and is being compared to leading models from OpenAI and Microsoft. Nvidia has called DeepSeek's new model "excellent" while Sam Altman has welcomed the competition, and promised more from OpenAI. Meanwhile the US dollar advanced after US President Donald Trump threatened to slap tariffs on foreign-produced semiconductors, pharmaceuticals and some metals to compel producers to manufacture in the country. China's DeepSeek Sparks Rout of Nvidia, Global Tech
Wall Street had a rough start to the week on concern that a cheaper artificial intelligence-model from China could threaten the dominance of US technology, spurring a selloff in stocks and a flight to haven assets. From New York to London and Tokyo, equities got hammered, with the S&P 500 dropping 1.9% and the Nasdaq 100 down 3.1%. The latest AI modeal from Chinese startup DeepSeek rose to the top of the Apple’s appstore charts over the weekend, presenting a visible challenge to costlier models like OpenAI and raising questions over the hundreds of billions in planned spending on the technology by the likes of Microsoft Corp., Meta Platforms Inc. and Alphabet Inc. Treasuries rallied alongside haven currencies like the yen and the Swiss franc. Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies tumbled. Bernstein Research senior semiconductor analyst Stacy Rasgon explains why he thinks Monday's market reaction may be overdone. Stacy speaks with Tom Keene and Paul Sweeney on Bloomberg Radio. Putin Says He's Ready to Meet With Trump About Ukraine
Russian President Vladimir Putin said he’s ready to meet with US President Donald Trump to discuss Ukraine and oil prices among other issues. “It will likely be better for us to meet, and based on today’s realities, speak calmly about areas that are of interest for both the US and Russia,” Putin said in comments broadcast on state television. “We are ready, but this depends above all on the decision and choice of the current US administration.” The Russian leader already said this week that he was open to talks on the war in Ukraine as he offered his congratulations to Trump before his inauguration. On Friday, he again voiced his readiness for a meeting after Trump threatened new sanctions on Russia if it refused to negotiate. Angela Stent, non-resident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, discusses the impact of Trump returning to power on Putin's near-term strategy and how the Russian leader is being viewed among his own citizens.
