A court in Uganda has sentenced Thomas Kwoyelo, a former senior commander of the rebel group the Lord's Resistance Army, to 40 years in prison for war crimes including murder, rape, enslavement and torture. Victoria Nyanjura was 14 years old when she was abducted by the group from her school in Northern Uganda. She was forced to work for the group and was repeatedly raped. Parts of the Sahara desert have flooded for the first time in decades. Severe rainfall in September over the Moroccan Sahara has left the desert sand dunes inundated. Some areas of southeastern Morocco saw more than a year’s worth of rainfall in just two days. Facing days, even weeks, on the open ocean, this year more than 70,000 irregular migrants and refugees are expected to attempt this perilous journey, many of them in overcrowded wooden boats. From Senegal, Mouhamed will have to survive the treacherous crossing with little more than a handful of biscuits and a few bottles of water, all to achieve his dream of making it to the southern border of Europe. For all those who make it to the Canaries, there will be thousands who die trying. It’s a tragedy unfolding in real time, buried under world headlines. In this hard-hitting investigation, #BBCAfricaEye reporter Mame Cheikh Mbaye takes viewers into the secretive world of migrants hoping to escape conflict and extreme poverty in Senegal and neighbouring countries, and what they hope will be a brighter future in Europe. Across Sub-Saharan Africa, more than 100 million live with some form of sight loss. In Uganda alone, more than 3 million are affected. Those in rural areas often struggle to receive adequate eye care. The BBC’s Agnes Penda visited a community of blind and visually impaired people in eastern Uganda who came together to support one another. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, it's estimated that there were 25,000 victims of sexual violence in 2023 alone — an average of two people every hour. ⁣Most survivors of sexual violence in the conflict-ridden area of Goma are treated in displacement camps near, where populations continue to swell amid ongoing clashes between rival groups.
