Why are hummingbirds, among the smallest and lightest of all birds, constantly seeking energy? Well, for one thing, they flap their wings at blazingly high speeds—50 to 80 times a second. Plus, their hearts beat from 500 to an unbelievable 1,200 times a minute. Most exhausting of all is their constant hovering in place as they fly, which they have to do to avoid damaging the flowers they feed from. Without food, a hummingbird can starve to death in two hours, so next time you’re hungry, be thankful it isn’t a life or death situation! During an in-flight interview on Feb. 2, 2012, International Space Station Expedition 30 Flight Engineer Andre Kuipers of the European Space Agency discussed the importance of physical fitness and how he is staying in shape during his long-duration mission with students involved in the "Mission X" fitness competition. The students are participating in various physical fitness competition challenges at a number of venues throughout Europe. Kuipers is in the midst of a scheduled five-month mission on the complex.

Moody’s Analytics Chief Economist Mark Zandi says the war with Iran needs to end immediately or recession will become more likely than not. He says another jump in oil and gasoline prices could cause consumers to “pack it in,” pushing a fragile economy into contraction. Zandi also warns the Federal Reserve may not be in a position to rescue the economy, and says he does not see Congress or the administration coming to the rescue either. How were the Giza Pyramids built? Archeologist and 2016 National Geographic emerging explorer Yukinori Kawae is trying to figure this out. As a young boy Kawae was fascinated by the Egyptian pyramids, and with his parent's permission moved to Egypt after high school because he wanted to see the pyramids in person. Now Kawae is heading up an interdisciplinary approach to studying the pyramids, collaborating with computer scientists and mathematicians to collect 3-D data that will provide a new perspective of the stunning structures—with the hope of learning more about the people who built them, how they built them, and why.
