According to May Pen Mayor, Winston Maragh, beautification work has started with the laying of topsoil and the planting of trees and flowers. He said the area will be fenced to prevent motorists from parking in restricted areas and damaging the work that has been done. Maragh said work has also started on a new bathroom at the facility which is owned by Sugar Company of Jamaica Holdings Limited, with the corporation having a long-term lease that started approximately two years ago. He said that there are also plans to install solar streetlights in the area of the mineral bath. The foundations for the poles are expected to start being established shortly, as the council seeks to “brighten up the place”. Senegal and Chad have reacted strongly to remarks by French President Emmanuel Macron about African countries being ungrateful over France's role in helping fight militant jihadist insurgencies. On Monday, Macron said that Sahel states "forgot" to thank France for its role, amid the continuing withdrawal of French troops from West African countries. He said no Sahelian nation would be a sovereign nation without France's intervention that prevented them from falling under the control of militants.
