Jamaica is one of the most photographed islands in the Caribbean. But the Jamaica shown to visitors is only part of the story. Behind resort walls, along ordinary public roads, beneath farmland, inside old fortifications, and in places already marked on every map are sites carrying centuries of history that most people pass without stopping to understand. In this documentary, we count down 10 places in Jamaica that reveal the history most travel brochures leave out. From a lagoon famous for its beauty but marked by generations of drownings, to a ruined mansion destroyed from within by seawater. From the battlefield where Spanish Jamaica effectively ended in 1658, to caves used by Spanish soldiers, escaped enslaved people, smugglers, and wartime authorities. We visit Stony Gut, where the community of Paul Bogle was destroyed during the brutal suppression of the Morant Bay Rebellion. We travel into Accompong, where a Maroon community still exists under the framework of a treaty signed in 1739. We examine Fort Augusta, an eighteenth-century British fortification that now serves as a correctional facility. We return to Port Royal, where St. Peter's Church still stands beside the grave of Lewis Galdy, a man who survived being swallowed by the 1692 earthquake and thrown into Kingston Harbour. We explore Worthy Park Estate, a working agricultural estate dating to the seventeenth century whose surviving records provide an unusually detailed window into the lives of people who were enslaved there. And finally, we reach Bellevue Hospital on Windward Road in Kingston—an institution operating continuously since 1847, occupying a site that has witnessed Jamaica's transformation from British colony to independent nation. These places are not necessarily hidden. They are on maps. Some are tourist attractions. Some are visible from public roads. Some are still functioning institutions. Some are farmland. Some are ruins. But knowing where a place is does not mean understanding what happened there. THE 10 PLACES 10. Blue Lagoon — Portland A spectacular coastal lagoon shaped by freshwater springs, deep water, and a history far more complicated than its postcard-perfect surface suggests. 9. Folly Ruins — Port Antonio The remains of a grand early twentieth-century house whose construction story became inseparable from the slow destruction of its concrete. 8. Rio Nuevo — St. Mary The site of the 1658 battle that ended organized Spanish attempts to reclaim Jamaica, with the dead of the engagement still believed to lie beneath the surrounding ground. 7. Green Grotto Caves — St. Ann Limestone passages with a human history stretching from the Taino period through Spanish occupation, escape from enslavement, smuggling, and the Second World War. 6. Stony Gut — St. Thomas The former community of Paul Bogle, destroyed during the violence that followed the Morant Bay Rebellion of 1865. 5. Accompong — St. Elizabeth A historic Maroon community whose existence remains connected to the 1739 treaty that ended the First Maroon War. 4. Fort Augusta — Kingston Harbour An eighteenth-century British fortification whose walls now serve a completely different purpose as Fort Augusta Adult Correctional Centre. 3. St. Peter's Church — Port Royal A surviving piece of Port Royal's history, standing near the grave of Lewis Galdy, who survived the devastating earthquake of 1692. 2. Worthy Park Estate — St. Catherine A continuously operating agricultural estate dating to 1670, with surviving records documenting generations of plantation life and enslavement. 1. Bellevue Hospital — Kingston A continuously operating psychiatric institution established in 1847, occupying a historic compound on Windward Road that has endured through colonial rule, independence, and modern Jamaica. The story of Jamaica is bigger than the version printed on a resort brochure. It includes beauty, but it also includes war, resistance, slavery, colonial power, survival, institutional history, forgotten communities, and people whose lives were recorded only in fragments. "I am the light of the world." "I am the good shepherd." "I am the resurrection and the life." "Abide in me." The fourth watch: the voice that stays till morning. "I will not leave you comfortless." "Father, forgive them." "It is finished." "Peace be unto you." "Lo, I am with you alway." Every word of Jesus in this study is read from the King James Bible, unpacked slowly, with the original Greek and Aramaic opened up where it matters — tetelestai, shalom, talitha cumi, tharsei. Use this for sleep, for prayer, for the drive, or for a night when the mind will not stop. There is no music and nothing to watch. Just His voice, for four hours.
