NASA held a media briefing on Thursday, Jan. 8, at NASA Headquarters in Washington DC to discuss the upcoming Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission. SMAP, set for a Jan. 29 launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, will provide the most accurate, highest-resolution global measurements of soil moisture ever obtained from space and will detect whether the ground is frozen or thawed. The data will be used to enhance scientists' understanding of the processes that link Earth's water, energy and carbon cycles. The briefing participants were: -- Christine Bonniksen, SMAP program executive with the Science Mission Directorate’s Earth Science Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington -- Kent Kellogg, SMAP project manager with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California -- Dara Entekhabi, SMAP science team lead, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts -- Brad Doorn, SMAP applications lead, Science Mission Directorate’s Applied Sciences Program at NASA Headquarters SMAP is the last of five NASA Earth science missions scheduled for launch within a 12-month period. It is a critically endangered species. Overhunting, habitat destruction, and invasive exotic fish have brought the salamander to the brink of extinction. Recent studies revealed that fewer than 100 are left in the wild. But a group of 23 nuns in Mexico teamed up with other International experts to try and save the species. The nuns live in a convent nearby and have used the salamanders to make cough syrup for more than 150 years. Now they’re breeding them not only to keep their tradition alive, but also to save the amphibians from extinction. Lake Pátzcuaro in Mexico is the only place in the world these salamanders can be found. Experts say the nuns will play a pivotal role in the survival of the species. NASA held an Earth Science Briefing from the Kennedy Space Center about the Cloud-Aerosol Transport System (CATS) mission aboard the SpaceX CRS-5 Dragon cargo resupply spacecraft. The research will characterize and measure the worldwide distribution of clouds and aerosols -- the tiny particles that make up haze, dust, air pollutants and smoke; model organism research using fruit flies to study the biological effects of spaceflight; and, a new study using flatworms to better understand wound healing in space. The fifth SpaceX cargo mission to the International Space Station (ISS) under NASA's Commercial Resupply Services contract will carry more than 3,700 pounds of scientific experiments, technology demonstrations and supplies, including critical materials to support 256 science and research investigations that will take place on the space station during ISS Expeditions 42 and 43.

Ghost nets are no longer tended by fishermen, either because they were discarded or lost. As fish numbers decrease, fishermen have started using more nets to try to capture them. This, in turn, causes ghost net numbers to rise and trap more animals like this turtle. A group of fishermen saw this turtle struggling in the net when they were returning to port. They stopped and took the turtle aboard. After cutting the turtle loose, they returned it to the ocean.
