Beginning as a sleepy fishing village, Ocho Rios has seen explosive growth in the last decade to become a popular tourist destination featuring duty-free shopping, a cruise-ship terminal, world-renowned tourist attractions and several beaches and acclaimed resorts. In addition to being a port of call for cruise ships, Ocho Rios also hosts cargo ships at the Reynolds Pier for the exportation of sugar, limestone, and in the past, bauxite.The estimated population of the town in 2011 was 16,671, which is nearly 10% of the total population of St. Ann. The town is served by both the Donald Sangster International Airport (97 km west of Ocho Rios) and the Ian Fleming International Airport (17 km east of Ocho Rios). Scuba diving and other water sports are offered in the town's vicinity. The name "Ocho Rios" is a possible misnomer, as there are not currently eight rivers in the area. It could be a British corruption of the original Spanish name "Las Chorreras" ("the waterfalls"), a name given to the village because of the nearby Dunn's River Falls. In 2008, the attraction Mystic Mountain opened with a bobsled experience inspired by the Jamaican bobsled team that participated in the 1988 Olympics in Calgary. The attraction received a $570-million upgrade in 2019. The North Coast Highway from the Sangster International Airport at Montego Bay to Ocho Rios has been improved since 2007 and the journey is now an hour and forty five minutes drive. On 26 August 2011, the Jamaican government announced a $21 million revitalization plan for the resort area. Since March 2016, with the opening of the North-South portion of Highway 2000 (whose North terminus is located at Mammee Bay, a suburb of Ocho Rios), driving and commute times into the nation's capital, Kingston, have gone from over 2 hours to a little under an hour. The opening of this highway has reduced traffic on the old route between Jamaica's two cities (through the town and onto Fern Gully) immensely. Liguanea connects with Half-Way Tree by Hope Road, and to Cross Roads by Old Hope Road. St. Andrew was one of the first parishes in Jamaica to be established by law in 1867. Before being established, it was known as ‘Liguanea’, the Taino word for iguana. St. Andrew lies to the north, west and east of Kingston. As Kingston grew in popularity wealthy residents of Kingston began buying old “pens” in St. Andrew. “Pen” originally referred to a farm where livestock was kept, and until recently, many areas in St. Andrew were still called pens. “Pen” soon came to be considered a derogatory term for places where people lived and many of these pens were renamed “gardens”. Geographical Location St. Andrew stretches from Cross Roads to Rockfort in the east, and reaches up into the Blue Mountains, sharing borders with St. Thomas, Portland, St. Mary and St. Catherine. Overlooking Kingston and St. Andrew, the Blue Mountains reach as high as 1,930 metres at Sir John’s Peak within the municipal boundaries. The fan-shaped Liguanea Plains rise from sea level to the foothills of the Blue Mountains. St. Andrew along with the parish of Kingston has a total coastline area of 64.37 kilometres, with the total area of shoreline (usable coastline) being 48.8 kilometres. It was 85 acres of land from Knutsford Boulevard to Oxford Road where horse racing and polo matches were held. When the race track was closed down in the mid-sixties, the area remained as a large, dusty vacant lot on which learner drivers practiced. In the 1600s Port Royal was the capital of trade and the largest residential area of the Island. In 1692 when a massive earthquake destroyed Port Royal, the settlers and residents of the area had little desire to rebuild and thus realized the value of the land across the harbour known as the Liguanea Plain. At the time of the earthquake, there were around 8 or 9 houses on some 530 acres of land in the Liguanea Plain. Immigrants gradually started to migrate to Kingston and it continued to grow until January 1907, when a second earthquake followed by a catastrophic fire that lead it to a sudden halt of development. Much of Downtown Kingston was destroyed. Almost 1500 people died and over a million dollars worth of property damage was incurred. Trying to recover and rebuild, people wanted to move out of the old city and they looked to the merchants who owned much of the land bordering the city. They were sitting on gold mines. Grange was speaking at the official renaming ceremony of the popular stretch, commonly called the “Hip Strip”, late last month. “Reggae music was able to propel Jimmy Cliff from Somerton District to fame, and name recognition, from Brazil to other parts of South America, to Europe, Asia and the home continent of Africa. I know that the significance of this renaming exercise will have great impact on many of our aspiring talents, and they too, in time, will be propelled to greater heights. “As we, in the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, continue to strengthen our musical heritage, through the re-telling of stories, the celebration of our pioneers and the establishments of circuits, where our people and visitors to our shores may experience the power of the heritage, it is my pleasure to rename Gloucester Avenue, in honour of this cultural icon,” Minister Grange said. Cliff, who has received Jamaica’s highest honour, the Order of Merit, is best known among mainstream audiences for songs, such as “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”, “Many Rivers to Cross”, “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, “The Harder They Come”, “Reggae Night”, and “Hakuna Matata“, and his covers of Cat Stevens’s “Wild World” and Johnny Nash’s “I Can See Clearly Now”, from the film, Cool Runnings. They recently spent their first Saturday on the waterfront and told our news team that it was a refreshing, rejuvenating experience. "This is just the place to be when you want to relax and meditate. While the two friends relaxed, amateur fishermen were seen trying to get the fish to bite even as seagulls also took aim at the fish. Further from the shore, small boats meandered, seemingly making their way back to land. Nearby, couples gave each other space as they enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere either on the well-manicured lawns or in their cars. "Most people come here when there is an event like New Year's Eve fireworks or some party, so they don't get to enjoy the full beauty," said Norman Brown, who was there with his wife of two years and their young son. "I come here like on a Saturday afternoon or straight from church on a Sunday when it is quiet and peaceful like this, and we just enjoy the family time," added Brown, who had a bag packed with snacks and juice. "Hey, Gleaner! Nuh bother loud this up and mek the crowd start come here!" warned Brown with a smile.
