Legendary trader says Tech Bubble Worry Is Overblown
Chuck Clough, Chairman at Clough Capital, discusses why today’s AI-driven market is more sustainable than the 1990s tech boom. For almost as long as the artificial intelligence boom has been in full swing, there have been warnings of a speculative bubble that could rival the dot-com craze of the late 1990s that ended in a spectacular crash and a wave of bankruptcies.  Tech firms are spending hundreds of billions of dollars on advanced chips and data centers, not just to keep pace with a surge in the use of chatbots such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, but to make sure they’re ready to handle a more fundamental and disruptive shift of economic activity from humans to machines. The final bill may run into the trillions. The financing is coming from venture capital, debt and, lately, some more unconventional arrangements that have raised eyebrows on Wall Street. Even some of AI’s biggest cheerleaders acknowledge the market is frothy, while still professing their belief in the technology’s long-term potential. AI, they say, is poised to reshape multiple industries, cure diseases and generally accelerate human progress.   Yet never before has so much money been spent so rapidly on a technology that remains somewhat unproven as a profit-making business model. Tech industry executives who privately doubt the most effusive assessments of AI’s revolutionary potential — or at least struggle to see how to monetize it — may feel they have little choice but to keep pace with their rivals’ investments or risk being out-scaled and sidelined in the future AI marketplace. Sharp falls in global technology stocks in early November underscored investors’ growing unease over the sector’s sky-high valuations, with Wall Street chief executives warning of an overdue market correction. When Sam Altman, the chief executive of ChatGPT maker OpenAI, announced a $500 billion AI infrastructure plan known as Stargate alongside other executives at the White House in January, the price tag triggered some disbelief. Since then, other tech rivals have ramped up spending, including Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, who has pledged to invest hundreds of billions in data centers. Not to be outdone, Altman has since said he expects OpenAI to spend “trillions” on AI infrastructure.  To finance those projects, OpenAI is entering into new territory. In September, chipmaker Nvidia Corp. announced an agreement to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI’s data center buildout, a deal that some analysts say raises questions about whether the chipmaker is trying to prop up its customers so that they keep spending on its own products. -------- More on Bloomberg Television and Markets Like this video? CoreWeave Tumbles on Q3 Results; Nvidia Slips After SoftBank Stake Sale | Stock Movers
On this episode of Stock Movers with Lisa Mateo: - Shares of Nvidia (NVDA) slipped in the premarket session after SoftBank Group sold the entirety of its stake of the chipmaking giant for $5.83 billion to help bankroll AI investments, even as investors question the amount of capital pouring into a technology with uncertain returns. The Nvidia stake sale highlights how founder Masayoshi Son needs money to chase a plethora of projects that range from Stargate data centers to AI robot manufacturing sites in the US. Its exit coincides with a growing debate about whether spending by big tech firms from Meta Platforms Inc. to Alphabet Inc. — expected to surpass $1 trillion in coming years — will produce commensurate returns. - CoreWeave (CRWV) shares tumbled ahead of the US market open after the cloud-computing provider reported its third-quarter results and said a data center delay would impact fourth-quarter expectations, prompting JPMorgan to downgrade the stock. Analysts note that the supply constraints are short term but highlight execution risks. - Paramount Skydance (PSKY) shares soared in early trading after reporting financial results for the first time since a new investor group took over the media company in August. The media giant raised its target for job cuts and cost-saving measures. Paramount Skydance, which has been trying to buy rival Warner Bros. Discovery Inc., said in a letter to shareholders it plans an additional 1,600-person workforce reduction and a goal to achieve at least $3 billion in cost savings. -------- More on Bloomberg Television and Markets Like this video? SoftBank Sells Entire $5.8B Nvidia Stake, US Senate's Plan to End Shutdown | The Opening Trade 11/11
SoftBank sold its entire stake in Nvidia, pocketing $5.83 billion to help bankroll envisioned AI investments. On Tuesday, SoftBank executives sidestepped questions about whether the industry is fomenting an AI investment bubble, and said the sale had nothing to do with Nvidia itself but was a necessary financing measure. The Senate passed a temporary funding measure to end the US government shutdown, with a vote of 60-40, after a group of centrist Democrats backed the bill. The bill would pay all federal workers who were denied pay during the shutdown and forbid any federal layoffs through Jan. 30. AI Caution, US Stocks Slip as Softbank Sells Nvidia Stake | The Pulse 11/11
SoftBank Group sold its entire stake in Nvidia for $5.83 billion to help bankroll envisioned AI investments. The Japanese firm also reported net income for the second quarter that beat the average analyst estimate. The Nvidia stake sale highlights how founder Masayoshi Son needs money to chase a plethora of projects that range from Stargate data centers to AI robot manufacturing sites in the US. SoftBank already has plans to leverage stakes in sector linchpins from OpenAI to US chip designer Ampere Computing LLC. In the US, the end of government shutdown is in sight as the Senate passed a temporary funding measure backed by a group of eight centrist Democrats. The Senate’s 60-40 vote Monday comes amid escalating flight disruptions, food aid delays and frustrations in a federal workforce that has mostly gone without pay for more than a month. The Republican-controlled House must still approve the spending package, which keeps most of the government open through Jan. 30 and some agencies through Sept. 30. But Speaker Mike Johnson said he expects it will pass quickly. Also this morning, UK unemployment rose more than expected to 5% in the three months through September, prompting traders to add to bets on a Bank of England interest-rate cut next month. The reading is the in the three months through September according to the ONS. Opposition politicians pounced on the numbers, accusing Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves of stoking joblessness with her £26 billion increase in employers’ national insurance contributions, a payroll tax.
