The Corporation further introduces a New Year’s event at its flagship attraction in western Jamaica – Harmony Beach Park, Montego Bay. The annual Fireworks on the Waterfront and Fireworks On The Bay hosted by UDC and its subsidiary, St. Ann Development Company (SADCo), respectively, have become a staple for many families across Jamaica as a tradition to usher in the New Year. Over the years, thousands of Jamaicans have gathered along the Kingston Waterfront and at Ocho Rios Bay Beach to witness the island’s most stellar fireworks displays. Situated on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, this archipelago still bears the scars of a tumultuous birth. This living, volcanic land thrust up from the ocean depths. Its tormented Nature brought forth masterpieces and has swallowed up numerous enigmas. First of all, we will go to Yonaguni, a little island of 29 square km in the westernmost part of Japan. Shotaro Maja was born and bred here and this remote island holds no secrets for him. His father, a professional diver, discovered an extraordinary underwater site in 1984. He’s totally convinced that it is an archaeological ruin. Now it’s up to Shotaro to solve Yonaguni’s underwater mystery. Then we will go and discover a little-known and dangerous discipline: the ice climbing, with its best ambassador, Nae Yagi, champion of Japan. Nae is preparing an expedition in the area of Nagano to a risky and unknown climbing site. At 31, Nae is at the peak of her discipline. She has been able to confront her doubts to rise to the top of an extremely demanding sport. Lastly, we will stretch into the Ondekoza’s daily life. For 46 years it has also been the name of a group of virtuoso musicians; they play the traditional Japanese drums, the taiko. Naoto Kinoshita is the youngest member of this troup living in community. The Ondekoza percussionists are internationally well-known for their talent but also for their athletic conditions. The members of Ondekoza follow a particular life code, the Soga Kuron, a philosophy that combines music and running. Early Christmas morning, children, dressed in their best or new clothing, take their parents by the hand and accompany them to the spectacular Grand Market (often called Gran' Market) as it is considered the holiday's highlight. Gran Market is held in the major towns all over Jamaica, but Kingston has the most outstanding festival. This festive atmosphere makes winter one of the best times to visit Jamaica. May Pen Mayor Winston Maragh said the authorities will remain vigilant as they try to keep Main Street clear for shoppers this Christmas. According to Maragh, the ground of the old police station is almost empty as vendors breach the rules daily. “Over there is half empty right now. Vendors still want to stay on Main Street, and when police go out there right now, they take out phone videoing behaving like they are lawyers,” he said. Following Pope Francis’ funeral service, St Peter's Basilica, in Rome, finally reopened to the public, and our reporter in the Italian capital, Tony Irungu, joined the crowd and takes us on a tour inside the sumptuous 16th basilica - the world's largest church - where the Pope’s body laid in state. Hundreds of thousands of mourners from all over the world had lined up for hours throughout different days to catch a glimpse of Pope Francis’ body in a simple wooden coffin placed at the main altar of the basilica, that hosted the funeral service and masses. Ahead of the funeral, the coffin of Pope Francis was sealed in St Peter’s Basilica on Friday and the square was blocked to the public until Saturday. It is believed that over 200,000 people attended Pope Francis’ funeral in St Peter’s Square, where the basilica is located, on Saturday. In a break with tradition, the pope was buried in a private ceremony in the Santa Maria Maggiore church, rather than at St Peter's Basilica.
