For 30 minutes per day, kids learn reading and maths on a tablet, in their own language and at their own pace. Especially during the day, because then more than a thousand prisoners are not locked up. More freedom for PDLs means less control for correction officers. A permanent balancing act. The so-called "CIW" is a women's prison in the Philippines, and constant vigilance is the top priority. Especially in the maximum-security wing. This is where the prison’s most dangerous PDLs are located. As if the sheer number of PDLs – “persons deprived of liberty” wasn't intimidating enough, one fact makes entering the prison even more dangerous for correction officers: they carry no weapons. The only way to verify that there isn't a single prisoner missing is by counting heads over and over again! A total of five times a day! The area within the walls almost resembles its own city. Large and small shops are spread across the site. And in some areas, they even handle dangerous objects, like scissors and knives. Protection around the prison is vitally important. Especially because the Philippine women's prison borders directly on a residential area, separated only by a wall. That’s where male correction officers stand guard. He decided to bring this breed back and let the rest of the world know about the characteristics of this sturdy horse. Since 2009 he’s been concentrating his efforts on the spotted horse, the charat in Kygyrz. Bastien CHAIX Bastien came to Kyrgyzstan for the first time 9 years ago. This ornithologist-slash-naturalist fell in love with this country where the people are in such close contact with Nature. Bastien, a committed enthusiast, has been leading scientific expeditions for the NGO Objectif Sciences International, since 2009. To make the youth of Kyrgyzstan aware of environmental issues the organism funds expeditions with youngsters from the Karakol orphanage who’ve lost contact with the world of Nature. Through the dust and heat of the dirt tracks in the south, one can sometimes catch sight of an odd vehicle. It’s the all-terrain eBilim bus. 🇲🇼 These primary school children in Malawi have a digital teacher. Malawi has free primary schools - but almost 90% of 10 year olds are unable to read properly. So the government is distributing electronic tablets to schools up and down the country. It was just gigantic, and so packed! There were areas given over to various foods more or less in the centre -- not just a hall or two but acres! Then you get to the clothing, textiles, and other areas. There's even one area where people are having their feet, nails, hair, etc done and getting massages. Some areas get so full you have to weave your way through. It goes without saying that you need to be careful of your possessions (I noticed everyone, even the locals, were carrying backpacks in front of them), but you also need to beware of the heat re sunburn, heat-stroke and dehydration. You also need to watch where you're going as some areas are concreted but others are dirt and potholes, there are banana skins and sometimes other rotting things on the ground, and porters with trolleys are always in a rush to get by. You don't have to worry about traffic though as you'll be able to walk faster!
