Despite not being able to confirm the time the crocodile was spotted and removed, Donaldson said, “there was a reported crocodile incident, I’m assuming, in Salt River. The Caribbean Coastal Management Foundation who manages the protected areas on behalf of the Natural Resources Conservation Authority (NRCA), collected the animal and I believe they relocated it.” In a video circulating on social media, the crocodile was spotted in the shallows of the river, as on-lookers remained a safe distance. Surrounded by sugar plantations, Spalding is located along the main road connecting the plantations to the cities of Mandeville, to the Southwest, and May Pen, to the Southeast. Spalding housed a post office, bridging the gap between rural plantations and larger cities. MODERN SPALDING EDUCATION There are five educational institutions with-in Spalding: Spalding High School, Spalding Primary, Spalding Library, and the Knox Complex of Schools (Knox Junior School, Knox College, and Knox Community College). A unique relationship exists between Spalding High School and Knox Complex of Schools. Spalding High School represents an education system built on a faulty foundation damaged by colonialism, while the other represents a beacon of education in Jamaica created with a post-colonial method of practice. Spalding High School began as a non-traditional educational program and was viewed as a school of convenience. Since its origin, Spalding High School has been under-equipped for success in modern education. As I turned the corner, I thought to myself, “This is perfect. This is something downtown needs.” Jamaica has always been home to a wealth of artistic talent. I experienced this as a student at the Edna Manley College of Visual and Performing Arts back in 2005. The school was brimming with students from all parts of the island pursuing avenues of success in the arts, and it wasn’t difficult to run into a variety of people with cultural interest and burgeoning talent, developing their craft and soon ready for society’s recognition. I was at home amongst musicians, dancers, actors, painters, sculptors, designers, and the like. Edward Long describes it in his History of Jamaica printed in 1774: This bridge is flat and composed of planks on frame of timberwork which rests upon two piers and two buttresses projecting from the banks, constructed with piles and braces interlaced with masonry. When this bridge was being constructed, the sixteen plantations in the Bog Walk area were obliged to send one slave in every fifty to work on the River Road, sometimes called Sixteen Mile Walk. Gravel, marl, lime, sand and stone had to be dug. Slaves often lost their lives as they performed dangerous tasks in the Gorge. Contracts for timber and for masons to work on the bridge were authorized at vestry meetings. Between 1881 and 1915, the floor of the bridge was washed away and later re-floored with iron girders and buckle plates taken from the original flooring of the May Pen bridge. Today, the bridge of three spans is supported by two piers and two abutments. In the 1930s it had metal handrails and later wooden ones, but these were devoured by the river at different times. Semi-circular spheres are now the only protection on the bridge itself. According to Councillor Steve Graham (Jamaica Labour Party, Old Harbour Central Division) the owner of a property across the road — which houses the bus park — has given notice to the St Catherine Municipal Corporation. ✔️JAMAICA IN 4K DIFFICULT And HARD Food Vendor Life Selling In The Market In 2023 Was UNFORGETTABLE The area now used for vending will have to make way for the relocated bus park. “A part of the market will now become the bus park and taxi stand; vendors will be relocated to the market house,” Graham told the Jamaica Observer. He could not provide a specific completion date but noted that work is being done “night and day” at the site.
