On January 28, 1986 NASA lost seven astronauts when a booster engine failed, causing the Shuttle Challenger to break apart just 73 seconds after launch. But what exactly went wrong during the launch and in the preparations for the big day that led to such a catastrophic failure? Engineers at Morton Thiokol had warned managers not to launch as the “O” rings that sealed off the segments of the boosters might not expand as planned, but they were ignored. Worse still, this problem had been noticed from the very beginning of the Shuttle problem, but was covered up to give NASA the commercial edge in sending satellites into space. I know I said I was done buying fruit trees but I wanted this one for a long time and I had to get it. I'm glad I now have it. It's a great mango variety. Here is a description from Tropical Acres Farms about it: https://www.tropicalacresfarms.com/product-page/phoenix Phoenix is an exceptional selection from the breeding program of Gary Zill of Boynton Beach, FL, and was a Jakarta seedling (planting # C-26). The tree was so named after the mythological Phoenix because it was cut back for removal but came back later and fruited. The trees appear to be vigorous growers with vertical-oriented canopy. We planted several in 2017 and have a few grafted to Gary Zill's experimental dwarfing rootstocks as well. The flavor of Phoenix has been difficult for us to classify but falls somewhere between classic and Indian flavors, with a strong subacid component to balance out its rich sweetness and having some resin present. Regardless, we consider Phoenix to be an elite-flavored mango and one of the best of the newer varieties. We will continue to evaluate its production in the coming years. A gigantic generator on a journey through the narrow villages of Germany. A three hundred and ninety ton giant on a daring journey: A team of german heavy-lift-specialists have to transport a generator from a disused coal plant to its new operation site – 120 kilometers away. Sounds easy – but the weight and dimensions of twelve-million euro generator pose a gruelling challenge for everyone involved. The gigantic, modular transport structure that hauls the colossus, requires constant modification while en route in order to overcome the distance to the next power plant. First obstacle to tackle is the small, winding country roads from Voerde. Then, a pontoon is taking the stator a smooth eighty kilometers down the Rhine. But after that comes the most difficult part of this already challenging route: with ramshackle bridges, tight roundabouts and steep curves ahead. It’s a race against time.
