As Snow, Shutdown Grounds Flights, How Will Thanksgiving Be Affected?
More than 10,000 flights in the US were delayed or canceled on Sunday as snowy weather in Chicago added to the stress for airlines coping with a third day of US government-mandated restrictions on air travel. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned that US air travel would come to a virtual standstill during the Thanksgiving holiday in late November if the government shutdown persists, as more air-traffic controllers opt not to work without paychecks. US equity futures rise as big tech earnings from Microsoft and Meta delivered on optimism around the AI boom. President Trump sets the tariff rate for South Korea and India while going ahead with a 50% levy on copper imports, but exempting refined metals. Jane Foley of Rabobank says we could see a washout of dollar positioning this week. Julian Emanuel of Evercore ISI cites the copper tariff announcement as the main driver of volatility, rather than the Fed's rate decision. “Bloomberg Brief” delivers the market news, data and analysis you need to set your agenda. China Summons Nvidia Over H20 Chip Security Risk; US Copper Premium Evaporates | The Pulse 7/31/2025
President Donald Trump unleashed a series of tariff deals and demands on the eve of his Friday deadline, including surprises on India and copper as the US president attempts to create a new global trade order. Trump on Wednesday announced tariffs of 15% on imports from South Korea that matched the rate for neighbor Japan, and a painful 25% levy on imports from India that was accompanied by criticism of its purchases of Russian energy and weapons, pressuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Trump also shocked markets with new tariff rules on copper, sinking prices in New York by a record after exempting the most widely traded forms of the metals from 50% tariffs. In market news, Meta and Microsoft led Magnificent Seven stocks higher in premarket trading on Thursday after the companies blew past Wall Street estimates and pledged to boost investments in their artificial intelligence efforts. Wall Street Week | Tariff Legality, Businesses on Mamdani, Pediatrics Under Pressure, Protein Boom
This week, can Congress delegate its authority over trade and tariffs to the president? The Supreme Court questioned the Trump Administration’s argument that a statute passed by Congress gives the president the power to impose worldwide tariffs. But if the Court disagrees with the administration, who pays - and how much? And, New York City’s mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani vows to make the city more affordable, but business leaders say that it’s more complicated. Plus, HHS Secretary RFK Jr. claims doctors are reaping big profits from vaccines, but pediatricians say that’s far from the truth. Later, why are Americans eating so much protein? President Trump reached a deal with drugmakers Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk to make GLP-1s more accessible to more of the American population, and protein producers - new and old - could stand to gain.
