Trump Weighs Strikes on Iran But Wants Diplomacy White House
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said security forces have "full control" of the country after two weeks of violent unrest. President Donald Trump said Washington is mulling potential options in response to reports of deadly crackdowns on Iranian demonstrators, and an Iranian government official reached out to the president's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff. Protests in Iran erupted on Dec. 28 after a sudden collapse in the value of the currency, and have resulted in more than 540 people being killed and over 10,000 arrested, according to the Human Rights Activist News Agency. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed to reporters Monday that an Iranian government official reached out to Witkoff “expressing a far different tone than what you’re seeing publicly.” Leavitt also said Trump had spoken to Elon Musk about how to help restore internet communications in Iran, which have been restricted by the regime in a bid to curb the demonstrations. Trump on Sunday floated Musk’s Starlink service as a way to address the issue and told reporters he planned to call the billionaire to discuss the matter. ---------- Like this video? Trump, China's Xi To Speak To Finalize Tiktok Deal | The Opening Trade 9/19
US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping are set to seal the deal on a TikTok agreement. It’s unclear who exactly should be claiming victory. When the two men speak by phone today, they’ll likely green-light a pact allowing the Chinese-owned app used by 170 million Americans to remain in the US. That’ll see Beijing license TikTok’s prized algorithm to a new majority American-owned entity, with all data housed overseas. The Opening Trade has everything you need to know as markets open across Europe.
