The Zong Massacre. (Short Documentary) On 6 September 1781, the Zong, a slave ship, left the west coast of Africa bound for Jamaica. The ship was overcrowded, carrying 442 Africans…The human cargo was manacled and packed so tightly, they had no room to move. But for the captain, Luke Collingwood, the more Africans he could squeeze in, the greater the margin of profit for both the ship’s owners and himself. Zong was originally named Zorg (meaning "Care" in Dutch) by its owners, the Middelburgsche Commercie Compagnie. Top 5 High Schools For Girls in Jamaica And their History 5. St. Andrews High School for Girls On September 21, 1925, the Jamaica High School for Girls, as it was first called, opened in the recently purchased dwelling house on an 8-acre site on Cecelio Avenue in kingston, jamaica. The Centenary Synod of the Presbyterian Church in Jamaica decided that this was a fitting way to celebrate its anniversary and in partnership with the then Wesleyan Synod of Jamaica, had started the venture. The aim of the school as set forth by the promoters was “to provide a secondary education for boarders and day scholars.” It would aim at the ‘Christian education of each girl keeping in mind the fourfold development: physical, mental, spiritual and social essential to equip her with a healthy body, a well-trained mind, religious habits and ideals, to gain her own living and to serve her community worthily’. The school started with 10 day girls and 11 boarders, but grew rapidly so that by October, 1929 when it was recognized by the Schools’ Commission for grant-in-aid there were 153 of whom 51 were boarders. Merl Grove High School began as a preparatory school shortly before 1920, on Marverly Lane off Molynes Road. This was the home of Nathaniel Speid, a retired elementary school teacher. Sometime in 1920, the Speid’s moved to 77 Constant Spring Road where the school continued in a little red two-roomed building, in front of their residence. 5 OLDEST JAMAICAN SCHOOLS And their history   Founded on May 21, 1729, Wolmer's Boys' School can claim to be the oldest school in the West Indies. This was the day John Wolmer made his last will and testament, in which, he left the bulk of his estate for the foundation of a free school in the parish in which he happened to die.  The sum of his legacy was £2,360.  Little is known of John Wolmer, except that he was a goldsmith who practised his craft in Kingston, for more than 20 years. The Kendal Train Crash, A case of Sabotage? Kendal, Manchester a sleepy town in South central Jamaica, its almost midnight, on the first of September 1957, the residents of the town are fast asleep, but in a few minutes their lives will be changed forever. A passenger train travelling from Montego bay, which is scheduled To make a stop at the Kendal station is out of control, the operator tries to stop it but the brakes don’t work. The 1,600 passengers on the train are not aware of the tragedy that awaits them. As the train was approaching a bend in the tracks, the speed caused the coaches to sway, then there was a horrific jolt, and tremor likened to that of an earthquake. Eight of the 12 coaches were wrecked and 171 souls were plunged into eternity while seven hundred lives were changed forever, but how did this happen and why did the brakes not work? Was it an accident or a case of sabotage?
