In August 2014 Islamic State militants slaughtered hundreds of Yazidi men in northern Iraq and enslaved Yazidi women. Tens of thousands of Yazidi refugees fled to the Sinjar mountains. Knowing the terrible conditions her people were enduring, Vian Dakhil, a member of the Iraqi Council of Representatives and a Yazidi, made an emotional plea on the parliament floor. To study warming temperatures, the Rob Dunn Lab has set up small chambers to simulate climate change in the woods of North Carolina and Massachusetts. Heated air is pumped into the open-top chambers to see how predicted warming levels could affect plant and insect life. The experiment is one of the most robust of its kind, with six years of data and 12 chambers in two locations. July 30, 2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis—the maritime disaster made famous by Captain Quint’s monologue in the movie Jaws. The heavy cruiser sank in just 12 minutes, after being torpedoed by a Japanese submarine shortly after midnight on July 30, 1945. Some 300 men went down with the ship, and the remainder of the crew—between 800 and 900 men—struggled for five days to survive dehydration, hypothermia, shark attacks, and madness while floating in the South Pacific. How and why nighttime thunderstorms form is still a mystery. They occur in a layer of the atmosphere that scientists haven't been able to study easily. Usually, the atmosphere is more stable after the sun goes down, but on the Great Plains, many summer storms form after sunset and can be severe.
